Episode summary
Welcome to episode 435—we’re back to three shows a week, and today’s a gambling lean show, not gospel, since the draft and injuries will still shuffle things. Quick big-picture note: sports are more event-driven than ever; when it feels big—like the World Baseball Classic—casuals show up, which is why the NFL stays king and why the NBA playoffs must feel like an event to pop. Alright, let’s roll; like, rate, subscribe.
We’re doing AFC win totals—Goldilocks style: too high, too low, or just right. Start with the AFC East?
Bills at ten and a half, slight juice to the over—where are you?
Over. The cross-division draw is nasty with the AFC West and NFC North plus Baltimore, Houston, and the Rams, but they should feast in-division and still get to eleven with Josh Allen.
Dolphins at four and a half, even money to the over.
Way too high; they profile as a bottom-tier team this year. Pass and move on.
Patriots nine and a half with over juiced.
Too high. Last year’s cake schedule is gone; eight or nine wins is more likely than eleven.
Jets at five and a half.
Just right with a small lean to the over; they get several true layups, so a couple steals against good teams gets them there.
AFC North: Ravens ten and a half, over heavily juiced.
Slight over. Two South divisions help, strength games are tough but manageable, and I expect a locked-in Lamar post-deal even if the weapons aren’t perfect.
And yes, those Lamar boxing clips—great cardio.
Bengals at nine and a half.
Just right. Explosive offense, shaky line, bad defense, and I don’t trust the organization to reach twelve; nine or ten is the band.
Browns at six and a half.
Just right with frisky upside. Soft pockets on the schedule—NFC South plus some beatables—could nudge them up.
Steelers eight and a half.
Under. Messy quarterback plan and lingering drama make this feel high; I’d rather they had grabbed a steady vet. I also like Baltimore to win the division.
AFC South: Texans nine and a half.
Under. Tougher slate, likely defensive regression, and some worry about a sophomore dip make double digits a stretch.
Colts eight and a half.
Under. I didn’t buy them last year and still don’t; too many health and stability questions.
Jaguars nine and a half.
Over. Best roster in the division, quarterback feeling right, and double-digit wins in play.
Titans six and a half.
Just right. Six or seven wins fits; I prefer Jacksonville to win the South at plus money.
AFC West: Broncos nine and a half.
A touch low; I lean over. Favorable strength games, defense should travel, and even with some Payton-quarterback frost, there’s room to clear.
Chiefs ten and a half.
Love the over. Plenty of beatable opponents, and eleven wins has been their annual floor; still the class of the division.
Raiders five and a half.
Just right with a lean to the over; rookie QB risk meets a defense led by Max Crosby, so I’d likely stay away.
Chargers ten and a half.
Red-hot under. Brutal strength games, lingering playoff scar for Herbert, and unclear receiver room; I like division winners as Chiefs, Bills, Ravens, and Jags—chalky for now.
Great to be back with three shows a week; next up is either a mailbag or NFC totals. Enjoy the tournament, keep those brackets alive, and we’ll talk next week—What’s Right.
