Welcome to the Huberman Lab Podcast, where we explore science and practical tools for daily life; today I’m joined by Dr. Dacher Keltner of UC Berkeley to dive into emotions, how teasing and embarrassment knit groups together, and how to reliably spark awe by shifting from the tiny to the immense in everyday moments.
Awe feels like an upward lift we all recognize but struggle to explain; what first pulled you into studying it?
Early emotion science obsessed over anger and fear, but my life was filled with music, art, protest, and beauty, so when Paul Ekman told me to study awe, it clicked—I wanted a science that could speak to that larger human experience.
Where do we now stand on facial expressions—still six basics, or has that map expanded?
We’ve moved far beyond six; labs worldwide and large-scale AI analyses across many cultures point to roughly twenty distinct expressions, with substantial cross-cultural overlap and about half to two-thirds reflecting evolved, shared patterns.
How do movement, language, and the inner feeling of emotion actually relate?
Motor patterns and words only weakly line up, vary by culture, and the felt experience remains the hardest piece; we see robust body signatures, but how they converge into a single feeling is still largely unknown.
Breath, voice, and even old frameworks like chakras seem to map onto physiology; how do you choose what to measure?
Deep exhalation engages the vagus and warms the chest, Darwin cataloged rich multi-channel expression, and I pick measures by going where the phenomenon lives—breath, face, voice, brain, and behavior in real contexts, not just labs.
What actually elicits awe in your studies?
Spectacular videos can do it, but fieldwork is gold—standing by a T. rex skeleton, beneath giant trees, or at Yosemite makes people feel small yet part of something vast, and we’ve seen it at concerts, on rivers, and in museums.
The jump from confinement to an open vista feels especially powerful; is that transition the core mechanism?
Yes—moving from narrow to expansive perception is a basic engine of awe, and in older adults a weekly “awe walk” that shifts attention from small details to wider patterns increased awe and kindness, eased pain, and improved markers like vagal tone.
Awe seems less like self-escape and more like being tethered to a bigger whole; I even practice a short drill that widens and narrows visual and interoceptive focus to change time perception.
That resonates—great apes show nature displays that look like early awe, and in humans it quiets self-referential brain activity, boosts parasympathetic tone, and opens us to belonging with nature, ideas, and movements we care about.
How do solo awe moments compare to the collective kind we feel at concerts or games?
Smells and sights can time-link us to our past, while music aligns hearts and brains in milliseconds so whole crowds sync emotionally, creating what sociologists call shared effervescence.
Live shows shaped my life—punk gigs that felt dangerous yet benevolent were profoundly bonding and unforgettable.
Music is a deep technology of meaning; it can move identity, soothe pain, and, for many of us—from Laurel Canyon folk to punk—ignite a lifelong sense of purpose.
Some peak experiences feel beyond words, like sparring or a mosh pit, where rules and risk create instant trust.
Exactly—words often trail the real thing; in disciplined physical extremes people meet at the edge, transcend fear, and form bonds that outlast the moment.
Why is Joe Strummer a moral beacon for you?
His lyrics touch deeper truths, his phrasing breathes conviction, and every statement felt fully lived—what Rick Rubin calls an unerring sense for what’s real.
That full-body truth is what we’re trying to detect with measures that signal when awe truly lands.
Let’s name awe blockers: over-identified self, language that narrows, and drug states that amplify me-first urgency; how do those shut the door?
Petty self-focus is the enemy of awe, and today’s narcissism, status chasing, and constant self-imaging smother the impulse to look outward—young people need music, nature, and shared challenges to shrink the ego and widen the view.
Sports can deliver that collective charge; a championship win connects fans through history in a way solitary achievements rarely do.
Across countries, fans describe fandom like a civic faith with rituals, time-spanning stories, and catharsis, and even coaches—like Steve Kerr—feel awe when arenas move as one.
Social media often drives the opposite of awe; could AI help us design for real connection instead of outrage?
Platforms have prioritized division and eroded shared experiences like going to movies or listening together, but we can design for community—think farmers markets—and social ties add roughly a decade of life, so tech should aim for that.
Digital can inspire too—the right visuals and soundscapes can feel vast, so I’m hopeful AI can guide people toward awe instead of pulling them into silos.
Agreed; if AI becomes a wise companion that points us to art, nature, and human warmth, it could amplify what’s best in us.
On bonding, why does sharp teasing among male friends feel harsh yet bring us closer?
Embarrassment signals commitment to the group, and playful teasing tests boundaries, surfaces norms, and, when it avoids humiliation, builds trust—as we saw in fraternity studies where skillful ribbing and visible blushes predicted stronger ties.
In dating, a blush shows attunement rather than creepiness, and in tight circles guys roast to your face but defend you in your absence, which is its own loyalty code.
That’s the subtle repair work of good teasing: laugh together, reaffirm the rules, and make sure everyone knows they’re still held by the group.
I grew up with a sister and was stunned by how two brothers on my block could fight hard, then instantly close ranks against any outsider; it makes me wonder if we’re losing that reflex to band together.
The loneliness research and the pandemic exposed real fragmentation—fewer shared outings, more solo meals, and less congregating—but I see young adults rebuilding with game nights, co‑living, cooking, festivals, and a huge embrace of yoga.
It’s wild how yoga and lifting went mainstream; resistance training now looks like a core longevity tool and busy gyms may be restoring a sense of belonging.
Health is deeply social, so markets, synchronized yoga, and even weight rooms work because they add meaning and camaraderie.
The Japanese onsen is a model of shared well‑being where ritual, water, food, and family are woven together.
Aquascaping gives me daily awe and reminds me we’d never treat our fish the way we treat ourselves—isolated, off rhythm, and poorly fed.
With strong cautions and focusing on classic psychedelics like LSD and psilocybin, how should we think about their role in connection and awe?
We should honor their indigenous roots and ethical traditions; used with care, they reliably open awe, soften the self, and deepen felt ties to life.
Emerging evidence suggests help with death anxiety, addiction, trauma, OCD, and panic, including for veterans, but I worry about casual microdosing treated like coffee.
It’s definitely not coffee, and the strongest data favor a few guided sessions over daily microdoses; I had rough early trips but later saw real benefit in a therapeutic setting.
Given culture wars and tech overload, how can older generations build spaces where younger people use these tools well without rigid party lines?
Awe offers a map; in our Cities of Awe work we re‑design urban life with pockets of nature, public art, face‑to‑face kindness, shared movement, and simple reflection so people feel part of something larger.
Temples once bundled this and attendance has dropped, so gyms and community hubs can weave in art, music, nature, and wisdom to restore shared fabric.
I’ve seen that spirit in CrossFit, and I keep thinking about Joe Strummer’s late‑night campfires where strangers sang, drummed, and talked; I’m tempted to start city campfires—would that be wise?
Campfires are ancient social technology for story, bonding, and safety, and even modern sauna chats echo that; yes, do it, and I’ll come.
They also bathe us in long‑wavelength red light that supports mitochondria, and people often wake feeling great; I may take a bus on a campfire tour to listen and share science.
My dream bus hits pickup basketball courts so people connect, and one more big one—do you believe something happens after we die?
I do, and I’m curious about your take.
After my brother died, I felt vivid presence and saw space differently, which nudged me from strict materialism toward the idea that consciousness may extend beyond our usual dimensions.
We lack good tools to study it, but I now lean yes.
