Episode summary

Tony Robbins is here—world-class strategist to presidents, royals, and champions—and I’m grateful because his work changed my life and the lives of people I love. An immigrant janitor who learned English listening to Tony’s tapes became my billionaire partner, my now‑wife rebuilt her life after losing 100 pounds with his material, and Money Master the Game hooked me personally; with a mostly business owner audience, I asked how he balances duty and enjoyment in the impact he builds.

Words train emotion, so I don’t frame it as duty versus enjoyment—I see the chance to contribute as the deepest joy. Money alone runs out of meaning; growth and service pull you out of bed in a way push can’t, and the right language keeps you in that state.

If you’ve built a foundation by thirty‑six, it doesn’t have to be pain and grind; you can live in joy and still go hard. The emotions you return to become home, so choose words and aims that expand you, not ones that shrink your world.

I got here on push and anger, though that’s faded; I work from wake to sleep and struggle to enjoy anything outside work. I feel I help people already and don’t buy that charity must hurt to count, but repetition numbed me in fitness and now in business, so I keep doing what I’m good at and I’m asking how to navigate that.

You’ve set a ceiling on fulfillment and made “be useful” your identity, which served you, but you wouldn’t accept mediocre in a venture—so don’t accept it in your inner life. The moonshot that pulls you is missing.

When astronauts came home from the moon, many crashed because they lost the next adventure; I solved my own version by building an unreasonable service goal and getting in the trenches. Feeding a billion people in a decade, air‑lifting food past blockades, rescuing kids from trafficking, planting trees to offset my flying—doing it hands‑on turned “have to” into “get to” and lit me up again.

You need an environment that ignites you and real contact with the people you serve; even adding a child shifted my world because every day felt new. You’ve mastered management—now reintroduce awe.

Three threads hit me: emotional connection, reframing as opportunity, and suffering; I’ve long believed in choosing a goal worth enduring for. I don’t carry much anxiety, but I’ve been very accepting of hardship.

Pain shows up; suffering is a choice, and you made it a target. Get out of your head and into your heart by choosing which part of you leads—the analytical driver or the creative, energizing self—and let identity and state do the heavy lifting.

Change your words, change your chemistry: three partners faced the same bad deal and felt rage, “annoyed,” and fury, and those labels shaped their reality. I dropped “depressed” from my vocabulary, reframed “starting over” as “starting fresh,” and the shift in language changed my state and choices.

I’ve written seven‑figure checks and toured schools and felt almost nothing, which is part of the problem. I can make good calls, but I don’t feel them.

Writing checks isn’t the point; you need skin in the game with people, not just transactions, to feel it. Proximity creates meaning.

How do you pick opportunities when you can do almost anything and still balance achievement with impact?

I start with mission—would I do it for free because it matters—then I look for people I love working with who have real track records so one plus one can equal five, and I make sure it’s fun and high‑impact. Then I run deep diligence on partners so I don’t buy years of pain.

Selfishly, at thirty‑six, the only thing I truly feel is teaching young men to provide for their families; what would you change in my behavior to grow both joy and impact?

Make enjoyment a primary metric—there’s the science of achievement and the art of fulfillment, and you’ve over‑weighted the first; build a moonshot around that calling. Teach ownership and free enterprise with concrete, emotional examples, diversify beyond your own company, and watch how meaning spikes when you see families change.

My richest moment was our first real cushion—one hundred thousand in the bank—because it moved us from survival to possibility; that’s the feeling I want to give. I’d target Gen Z men as a cohort.

Pick a bold, timed milestone that gets you up early and keeps you up late. An unreasonable two‑to‑three‑year target focuses energy.

One hundred thousand men each with one hundred thousand saved is a billion in real household wealth, and that feels concrete and exciting.

Lock in a clear target, even 100,000, revisit the feeling from that day, and keep teaching while you enjoy the journey.

Tony, you have an event coming up—want to share it?

It’s the Time to Rise Summit, born when COVID shut down my big events in California, Vegas, and Texas, so I built a studio and removed the travel and cost by making it free and virtual; I’ve run it every year for five years.

It runs for three days at three hours each day, like a great movie that actually changes your life, where we raise your energy, reset your mindset, get clear on what you want, build a plan, and remove what’s in the way with a community of over a million people from 193 countries.

It’s January 29 to 31 at 2 PM Eastern, you can join from home or the office—bring someone if you can—and there’s no charge at timetorisesummit.com; I look forward to serving you.
