Episode summary

You mentioned we each carry four distinct modes in the brain—what are they?

Each hemisphere has its own emotional network: the right watches the present for safety, the left strings events through time and holds what hurt us, which is why old pain and craving can flare. When that alarm settles, memory systems switch on and we can focus and learn.

So, bottom line, what are the four types?

Left-thinking is the taskmaster that uses language, rules, and plans to get things done; I nickname mine Helen. Left-emotional stores past wounds and protects us with fast reactivity; I call that part Abby.

Right-emotional lives in the present and feels the world through sensation and play, which can be joyful and impulsive. Right-thinking is spacious wisdom—connection, peace, and big-picture understanding—built through neuroplasticity.

Is that why meditation has you tune into breath and the room around you?

Exactly—it loosens the left’s loops and drops you into present-moment sensing, where we feel first and then think.

Neuroplasticity is real; it let me rebuild skills over eight years after my stroke, and it underpins how experience becomes wisdom. That right-thinking peace is wired into us, even though our culture often over-favors the driven left.

And here’s the awe that keeps me lit up: the odds of any one of us being here are staggering, which makes life feel like a sacred chance to love, support one another, and care for this planet we depend on.

Want to feel the hemispheres shift in real time? Let’s try glasses that let in light from one side of your visual field to nudge one hemisphere.

With the left side stimulated, I feel sharper and more locked in.

That tracks—those pathways boost analytic focus. Flip to the other side and the right hemisphere comes forward.

Now I feel noticeably more relaxed, like I’ve sunk into a lounger.

That’s the right brain’s roomy calm, and it’s anatomy, not suggestion; optic input crosses and lights up specific circuits, as recent fMRI work shows.

I toggled back and focus returned fast—how do I learn to switch like this on purpose?

Practice starts by noticing who’s driving right now, naming your four parts, and inviting the one you need; I can jump among them because I’ve gotten to know how each feels in my body.

Give character three brief play on purpose—like I had ER teams hopscotch between cases—and watch creativity and capacity snap back, instead of grinding in left-thinking all day.

When we balance inner drive with shared humanity and gratitude for being alive at all, we make better choices for each other and the Earth.

That was a most replayed moment from a previous episode; the full conversation is linked in the description.
