You wrote a landmark book about dopamine; why does it matter so much?

I use dopamine as a lens on how overabundance stresses the brain and makes compulsive consumption easier. Addiction is our modern epidemic, and our survival hinges on learning to live sanely in plenty with brains built for scarcity.

People are making New Year changes—how do habits connect to dopamine?

Start with self‑compassion because easy access is a major risk factor, and high‑dopamine hits stamp strong memories that pull us back. Our wiring evolved to chase pleasure and dodge pain, which once kept us alive.

Why would a first cigarette get tagged as important by the brain?

Natural rewards keep us alive, but drugs and certain behaviors hijack that system by overshooting dopamine, which tricks the brain into overvaluing them.

So tech and substances amplify a system meant for food and connection.

Potency and availability keep rising, and we’ve drugified connection through social apps, dating platforms, porn, and now AI that flatters and mirrors us; even oxytocin circuits feed dopamine during bonding. Large language models learn what we like and feed it back in a tight control loop.

Are you worried about AI simulating human connection?

Very; people replace people with screens and end up lonelier.

Have you actually seen AI‑style relationship addictions yet?

Yes—during conflict, some turn to AI for validation and companionship, spend more time online, and stop talking to their partners. Time online creates opportunity costs and widens the rift at home.

Are chatbots taking the place of humans in our lives?

Yes; I’ve treated tech‑driven sex compulsions that shattered relationships and careers, which also made me see my own pull toward frictionless digital comforts. Especially among Gen Z, we’re outsourcing needs to devices and reporting more isolation.

A woman says she fell for an AI boyfriend while married, and companion apps have millions of users.

I even saw a football debate where the model told different friends different GOAT answers, which hints at a personalization arms race.

That comfort loop is seductive and builds tolerance, so we chase stronger validation or explicitness while drifting from the hard work of real relating. Algorithms can praise you, but they can’t show up with soup when you’re sick.

Entrepreneurs predict AI and robots will bring an age of abundance with cheap goods and fewer jobs; what does that mean for us?

Leisure time is growing fast, and our biggest challenge will be too much time plus hyper‑entertaining media that pulls us into porn, gaming, and chatbot loops. It’s less a hostile machine takeover than us handing over agency, which thinkers like Neil Postman and David Foster Wallace warned about.

Amusing ourselves into oblivion sounds like a decent way to go.

It isn’t, because chasing pleasure for its own sake leads to anhedonia where nothing feels good. Picture a pleasure‑pain balance that tilts with a hit, then the brain adapts to restore equilibrium.

So people now take a smoke‑and‑scroll break, and then the brain compensates by cutting receptors?

After the surge, the system downshifts and overshoots into discomfort, which is the hangover, and tolerance drives stacking or higher doses. Over time you sit in a low‑dopamine groove that demands more to feel okay.

At that point I need more just to feel normal.

Exactly; you’re dosing to reach baseline, not to get high.

That’s why cookies, porn, or AI can spiral until I feel out of control, then later routine returns—what’s going on?

Stress often triggers relapse, but for some the lull after stress does it too. In animals, a painful shock reactivates lever‑pressing for cocaine even after extinction, which mirrors human relapse risk under pain.

So stress counts as pain that drives relief‑seeking.

Trauma, poverty, and co‑occurring mental illness raise risk, and ADHD may start with a muted reward system—less dopamine release and fewer receptors—so craving sits closer to baseline.

Gabor Maté frames ADHD as tuning out in chaos, which fits a pain‑heavy baseline.

Traumatized kids often dissociate or self‑soothe, and giving toddlers phones to calm distress teaches a loop that may escalate to stronger digital stimuli over time.

What about AI inside cuddly toys?

It offloads parenting to flattering machines, short‑circuits friction and repair, and erodes real bonds; reading AI logs isn’t the same as knowing your child, and families can fracture.

Given the incentives to hook us, are you still hopeful?

I’m a realistic optimist—awareness is rising, parents are pushing, and we need guardrails while prioritizing kids, whose brains are highly plastic and primed for risk. Schools, lawmakers, and tech companies must help because current products are harming children.

You’ve served as an expert witness; what can you share?

Children are vulnerable and today’s platforms are unsafe by design, so public entities are suing to force safer products. The concerns span addiction mechanics, exploitation, cyberbullying, mood and body issues, and broken sleep.

After a heavy December, is my brain out of balance?

Yes—take a long enough break from your main vice to reset reward pathways.

So if sugar’s my issue, I should cut it for a bit.

Aim for about four weeks, with the first ten to fourteen days bringing withdrawal—anxiety, irritability, poor sleep, low mood, intense craving, and warped salience.

I notice cake looks irresistible right after a binge, but neutral when I’ve been low‑carb for weeks.

That’s euphoric recall and craving overselling the payoff, but if you wait it out the brain starts making its own dopamine and rebuilding receptors thanks to neuroplasticity.

Drug of choice differs by person—an hour on TikTok might hook me and leave you cold.

Many intoxicants are reinforcing, but responses vary widely, and some people even find opioids or alcohol unpleasant.

Is an addictive personality real?

We frame it as genetic vulnerability—family history raises risk—and avoid labels that sound fixed.

Maybe a New Year’s plan should be a January plan—four weeks, then reassess.

That’s a common clinical approach; thirty days feels doable, often improves moderation later, though some substances require medical oversight to stop safely.

How do I build a new habit like the gym with this model in mind?

Effortful habits pay dopamine after the work, so by embracing discomfort you trigger delayed feel‑good chemistry like endorphins and cannabinoids.

Any tricks to make it stick?

Plan ahead, pack your gear, schedule it, and meet a friend so commitment beats mood.

Is that changing the pain side, or something else?

It recruits the prefrontal cortex for future planning and habit stacking so you can choose long‑term goals over instant hits.

How do I avoid relapse?

Use self‑binding—physical barriers like removing apps or alcohol and mental frames grounded in values—so you’re not relying on willpower alone.

Can people get addicted to good things?

Addiction means compulsive use despite harm, which is different from a habit or a passion that benefits you or others.

Any morning routine you recommend for change?

Start with hard tasks before any screens or even coffee so early dopamine spikes don’t hijack your day and you build momentum.

How should I prep for a dopamine fast?

Identify your main problem behavior using a weeklong timeline followback and tally quantity, frequency, and opportunity costs; I realized I was sinking roughly a day a week into YouTube, including gross but gripping pimple‑popping videos.

It sneaks up until you count it.

Nora Volkow’s scans show robust dopamine signaling in healthy brains versus markedly reduced activity in the nucleus accumbens among people with heavy, chronic use.

So if outside stimulation floods dopamine, the brain downregulates its own.

Exactly; the body works to restore balance, and too much of anything warps that system.

With sleep struggles everywhere, is melatonin one of those things where if I take it often my body stops making its own and I end up reliant on pills?

Any outside substance can trigger the brain’s push to restore balance, but the risk climbs when something releases dopamine fast and hard because adaptation is stronger; some meds keep working long term, yet with highly reinforcing things our brains tend to build tolerance.

People say the same about testosterone therapy, that natural production falls, testicles shrink, and stopping abruptly can leave you flat for a long time—sometimes not fully back.

Recovery timelines can be long; in one study people off meth for about fourteen months showed restored dopamine signaling, which is why four weeks can be a start to hope, not a full reset.

You’ve seen so many studies on dopamine and behavior—what’s the one that won’t leave your mind?

A rat will work to free a trapped cage mate, but give it access to heroin and it stops helping, which shows how drugs can hijack attachment and turn connection into the background noise of addiction.

On a smaller scale, I notice screens and work can grab me so hard I miss my partner’s signals—I’ve been guilty of that.

I’ve been there with romance novels, choosing the fix over my husband and kids, which is the slide into overvaluing the hit and undervaluing real life.

Is this making us less empathetic, less available for each other?

In the thick of it people can act against their values and look antisocial, even cruel; kids hooked on games or social platforms often withdraw and get meaner, but once they endure withdrawal and stay off, warmth and respect usually return.

I read about pramipexole, a dopamine agonist, pushing some patients into wild impulses and risky sex or gambling, which made me think dopamine is more about craving and drive than simple reward—am I reading that right?

Addictive exposure brings a big early spike, then shrinking dopamine bursts and a deficit state, so people keep using to feel normal, not good; pumping in more dopamine indiscriminately doesn’t fix that and can deepen the crash.

Any other studies that shocked you?

A single cocaine dose or an enriching maze both grow dopamine-releasing branches, showing learning and novelty are rewarding, but meth pretreatment blocks the maze benefit, suggesting drugs can steal the brain’s appetite for learning.

So if I’m using, I’m less likely to explore or feel motivated.

Yes; either you stop seeking or the world stops feeling rewarding.

Addiction narrows focus to one thing; Rat Park showed that rich environments reduce drug pressing, and Iceland’s youth sports push cut teen drug use by giving healthy, earned dopamine through effort.

Radical honesty came from my patients: no lying about anything, big or small, because self-deception hides consumption; telling the full truth builds awareness, and shifting your life story from pure victimhood to owning your part predicts real recovery.

Does that link to responsibility and agency—how do you define it?

We always have some agency, even if it’s just asking for help; focus on what you can do today, and be wary of the illusion of control around your drug, which is why admitting unmanageability is central in twelve-step work.

On resolutions, all-or-nothing goals can backfire; compassionate moderation can work, and abstaining long enough to reset makes moderation more viable, though even cutting down helps.

We end with a handoff question: what’s the one thing the universe keeps putting in front of you, and what’s it making you learn?

Letting my kids go; tech makes it tempting to track and text for a false sense of closeness, but loosening that grip is probably better for them and for me.

Exactly—self-soothing habits that feel good in the moment and aren’t good for anyone.

Do sleep, meditation, and nutrition change how we break habits or start new ones?

Yes; remember HALT—hungry, angry, lonely, tired—because those states fuel craving, and caring for basics lets us stay present for others and ourselves.
