You keep saying the future looks wild and bright when lots of people are anxious about it. Why?

We’re wired to expect doom, but the long view shows health, lifespan, and living standards rising while digital tools compound our ability to solve hard problems, including with AI. The real tension is social adaptation in the West, where big promises feel broken, while parts of the East see more upside and are leaning in.

People worry AI is a leap in kind, not degree, concentrating power and wiping out work in ways we have not seen before.

New tech always starts centralized, then spreads and commoditizes; AI is already racing to the edges with open models you can run at home, and costs are plunging fast. Like with early cancer cell therapies that began scarce and pricey before scaling, diffusion tends to broaden access and benefits.

You’ve been talking about the moon—what’s going on there?

AI plus robotics won’t just replace jobs, they’ll let individuals run real businesses with physical helpers in the garage, and today’s data-collection ‘arm farms’ are just the training phase. Attempts to outlaw AI services will struggle against local, open-source tools, so the big question is who grabs agency—like buying a few robots to fold shirts for your own shop—instead of waiting for permission.

That raises the bar for self-starting; some people may not clear it.

I think agency is innate but has been dulled by systems that script our lives, and the creator economy shows millions can seize it when the lanes open.

Back to the moon—what’s the practical play?

The moon has the elements, sunlight, and low gravity to build factories that make what Mars needs, then launch it with an electromagnetic track so payloads leave cheaply and often, even using lunar stone as a sacrificial shield on arrival. With self-replicating robotic workforces, a massive lunar economy becomes realistic.

Is space the next industrial revolution?

Earth’s transformation may come first from near-zero-cost energy—fusion looks increasingly workable thanks to AI-driven control of plasma, and it’s clean, unlike fission. Ultra-cheap power plus autonomous construction could make building fast and affordable, unlocking huge productivity.

Two questions: who owns the moon and what happens to Earth’s economy if we start mining off-world?

Real growth is productivity, not printing money; more abundant energy and materials make goods cheaper and life richer, like farming’s shift from backbreaking labor to automated abundance that cut global hunger. As prosperity rises, work hours fall and freedom grows.

Astropolitics gets thorny fast.

Frontiers start messy—expect disputes and even piracy before norms emerge—but abundance lowers the temperature on resource fights, which is its own peace plan.

How close are we to age reversal?

Aging looks like epigenetic drift—gene switches slip to the wrong settings—and small doses of reprogramming factors can reset cells to a youthful state; we’ve reversed blindness in animals, extended lifespans dramatically in mice, and human trials are underway. Over the next one to two decades, targeted treatments should expand toward systemic maintenance, with huge gains in healthspan and the economy.

That fits the idea of longevity escape velocity—just hang on while breakthroughs arrive.

Exactly; keep yourself in the game, and the best lever today is exercise—with fasting also helping—while we wait for clinical-grade interventions.

What happens to careers, family, and meaning if people live well past a hundred, and does UBI help?

More healthy years let people realize potential beyond narrow corporate roles, while UBI tends to spur inflation and passivity; better to widen real ways to create value, which digital micro-economies already prove out.

So where does transhumanism fit—interfaces or genetics?

Lightweight brain–computer links, even retinal implants, could give on-demand skills and instant reasoning without invasive wiring, and genetics will move from screening to edits and, eventually, contested enhancements; even the CRISPR case making embryos HIV-resistant shows the line is moving. Pressure to adapt—say for Mars—will keep pushing these debates.

Cells run on wild molecular pinball, and cold can pause that frenzy long enough to restart it, which still makes me feel like we’re living in a cosmic sim.

It’s mind bending that matter is mostly empty space, yet my hand can’t pass through a table.

Quantum weirdness adds more: imagine every like-particle entangled with all others, or time and space emerging from one changing quantum state acting like a universal clock.

That’s like a shared membrane for everything, a kind of connected pan-psychism vibe.

Back to bio ethics: I’m comfortable using CRISPR to prevent disease and even enhance traits, and we’re already doing adult gene-based therapies that hint at where this heads.

I’m fine with picking among embryos you already made, but I draw the line at changing or designing genes, especially when parents choose for kids.

I’d take a safe shot that meaningfully boosts cognition, but your framing is right that consent gets thorny when parents decide for future people.

Selection feels like what IVF already implies, but editing and creating cross into territory I’m not sold on yet.

The Overton window may shift once age-reversal gene cocktails for adults are normal and safe, because people will then ask why not start at the embryo.

Once parents see other kids thriving from selection against disease and for better health, competitive pressure will kick in, though we could get buyer’s remorse and a narrow menu of traits; one big study even linked higher IQ to slightly lower life satisfaction despite all the life perks.

In a world with superintelligence, the question becomes how your kid partners with it, so I see AI as a rocket booster we all get to ride, not a master to fear.

Same—give me the rocket, not the leash; now, what are you building with plants, and by the way I’ve been playing with nootropics in fun formats like toothpicks and pouches.

My day job at Ohalo turns off meiosis in plants so every sperm and egg carry both chromosomes, which lets us make uniform seed in crops that used to need cuttings and speeds breeding for yield, resilience, and nutrition while slashing farmer costs.

What’s going on with people leaving California?

A lot of founders have left or are planning to because decades of unfunded promises, huge pension holes, and boondoggles collided with new ideas like a wealth tax that erode property rights and set a precedent to expand, just like income tax crept from a tiny, temporary levy to today’s high rates.

It rewards looking virtuous even if the policy hurts the very people it claims to help.

We treat GMOs and nuclear like luxury taboos while poorer countries embrace them, and we inflated tuition and housing by flooding sectors with government money and rules, then wondered why prices exploded.

There’s that famous chart—more government involvement, higher prices; less, and costs fall.

Look at SNAP ballooning while many recipients are already unhealthy and billions go to soda, and consider that roughly half the country now depends on government checks, which makes reform politically toxic as AI becomes the new scapegoat.

Do you feel a split between how good reality is getting and how bleak it’s framed?

We went from Tomorrowland optimism to fear-soaked stories, yet we’re heading toward cheaper energy and food, more time with family, and robots doing the grind, so I want us to sell hope again.

People who feel afraid can hear hope as dismissal, so the rhetoric often pivots to finding an enemy.

Right, empathy gets turned into blame, and politics shifts from voting for what you like to voting against whoever you hate.
