Go Low - Cameron Young WINS The Players Championship over Matt Fitzpatrick

What’s up, my people—quick Go Low emergency because Cam Young, the 31-to-1 I gave out, just won the Players. I was home with the baby glued to Sawgrass all weekend, so we’re going golf-heavy and then back to football on Three and Out midweek; we also went live on YouTube right after the finish and will keep doing that for the big ones.

Why start with Cam? He’s a pure ball striker with that smooth pause-and-pop move, and the putter is now world class. His duel with Matt Fitzpatrick felt like a mini Ryder Cup down the stretch—trading blows on 13 through 18 with real juice.

What swung it on 16 and 17? Fitz found trees on the par five, Cam laid up to a nasty bunker lie, somehow saved par, then rolled in a cold-blooded birdie on the island green while the place roared.

How did 18 flip it? After rinsing one there the day before, Cam nuked a 375-yard draw that piled pressure on Fitz and closed it out like a killer. He shows almost no emotion, but the confidence from a win this big travels to the Masters and the PGA; with that putting and those irons, he’s an auto top-10 sprinkle and a live outright at venues where you can throttle it. He’ll be a little dicey at a brutal U.S. Open setup if the driver gets loose.

What about Fitzpatrick? Total grinder who’s modernized his speed, tracks everything he hits, and squeezed the most out of his game; the back nine told the story, with Cam at three under and Fitz at one under. He handled the USA chants with class and made it a real show.

Why is Sawgrass must-watch? Variance. You can make eagle or wear a double at any moment, which we rarely get on regular Tour stops. Water everywhere, windy par fives daring you, and real numbers in play—way better TV than a spray-and-pray birdie fest.

Did the final group implode? Michael Thorbjornsen quadded early, Ludvig Åberg looked untouchable until a bogey-double stretch kicked the door open; when your partner is spiraling, it’s hard to keep the vibe, and Sawgrass punishes even tiny misses.

Who flashed form? Xander Schauffele was excellent outside one rough day; if that’s even par instead of four over, he’s lifting the trophy. Justin Thomas bounced back from the Bay Hill back scare and the 79-79 week with a strong finish despite one ugly water ball.

What’s up with Scottie Scheffler? The driver got squirrely with some big slices early in the week, then the weekend steadied. He’s still elite, but until the tee ball is cleaned up, it’s hard to pencil him in to win at Augusta; the pressure of Tiger comps is real, even for a grounded guy.

Does Rory get a pass? Yes. He WD’d with the back, showed up late, and looked lost early here; should be fine by the majors.

How did the new PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp come off? Polished but human, very NFL-trained, and honest about golf being niche. Recreational golf exploded since 2020, so tapping big cities and creator golf matters; more full fields with real cuts is the right call because pay-for-play is the soul of this sport.

How do I bet golf? I mostly hammer top 10s and top 20s on elite players in form, then sprinkle a few outrights for fun. Hitting a long-shot winner is great, but living on them is a losing plan; parlays with small stakes can juice returns without going crazy.

Fitting question: stiff or extra stiff? With a six-iron speed in the mid-80s and 180 carry, stiff is the sweet spot for most players that profile; extra stiff is probably unnecessary. My bag is simple—players-distance irons, Vokey-style wedges, multiple putters, and gamer woods with fit shafts.

Philly-area golf around the PGA? West Chester has some strong public options, but prices everywhere have climbed; book early and be flexible on location.

Do I bet matchups or first-round leaders? Rarely. I stick to top 10s and 20s; day-one leaders and miss-the-cut props are pure coin flips, and I prefer rooting for makes, not unders.

What’s harder: a 59 or a 60-yard field goal? Among pros, give me the 59 as tougher; teams now try 60 routinely, but a sub-60 round is still a unicorn.
