When I was eight I fell off a roof, and the fall felt slow even though it lasted less than a second; that gap between physics and perception hooked me. Ever since, I’ve chased how a three‑pound organ, sealed in darkness, builds a model of reality and decides what to trust.

Most of us assume our experience is reality; how does this help me live better when it feels like there’s just one me?

It still feels like one person arguing with himself.

Think of a parliament that loves the same country but fights over direction; learn those voices and you’ll steer closer to who you want to be.

The idea that the brain is adaptable changed everything for me.

Plasticity means experience sculpts wiring, though some windows close early, like the one for grasping language. Humans arrive half‑baked with extra cortex and shift from fluid to crystallized intelligence, and big disruptions can jolt adults to update their internal models.

I want to change stubborn habits—where do I start?

Seek the hard‑but‑doable zone, chase novelty, and drop what you’ve already mastered to build new pathways. Active, social lives create cognitive reserve, while passive retirement and shrinking circles invite decline.

I’m 33—should I be laying tracks now, and what about that willpower area?

Yes; synapses peak early and then prune as you specialize, so early learning compounds. Novices burn more brain power than experts, and practice reshapes tissue—pianists versus violinists show it—because the cortex can be reassigned by what you do.

Can someone like me become truly disciplined, like a marathon runner?

Absolutely, but you need more than resolve—engineer motivation, make public commitments, and let the brain‑body flywheel spin. Support it with exercise, sleep, and diet; in animals, workouts even boost new neurons.

Where do you land on AI and social media for young brains?

I’m a cyber optimist; broad exposure ignites curiosity, which locks in learning, and a personalized tutor in your pocket can lift skills instead of outsourcing identity.

Isn’t pasting AI answers a trap? I can spot them a mile away.

Use AI to dump busywork but keep virtuous friction that grows judgment; collaborate with it instead of pasting. People reward visible effort, so redesign tests and hiring to surface critical thinking and creativity—AI is a superbike for the mind.

How should I use it weekly to actually get smarter?

Follow your curiosity and have it argue with you—ask for pros, cons, and blind spots. Set it to be brutally honest; private correction makes growth easier.

Can AI be funny or truly creative?

Today it remixes well but fumbles humor and selection; it can generate many options yet struggles to pick the one that will land. Humans still push the frontier by balancing novelty with familiarity, and formulas always expire.

Are brains and AI basically the same, and what does that mean for us?

They’re inspired by each other but different: AI shows jagged brilliance and needs massive training, while humans learn on the fly and know life from the inside. Even when outcomes match, we’ll crave humans in the loop, so live presence and human‑only work will matter more.

What about AI relationships and addiction, given how differently we’re wired?

Some will split off, but most are drawn by evolution to real touch and shared life; people also vary widely—from aphantasia to hyperphantasia to synesthesia—and those differences rarely cap potential.

Before we pause, you hinted you may have solved why we dream.

We think dreams defend visual brain turf during the hours of darkness; blindfolds can trigger sensory takeover within about an hour. REM pulses the visual system every 90 minutes to hold its ground, and the storytelling brain stitches those bursts into dreams.

So we dream to keep the visual cortex from being overrun in darkness, almost like a nightly placeholder, right?

Right; if there were constant daylight we likely would not need dreams, though deep sleep might still do cleanup, and across primates the more plastic the brain, the more REM you see, with infants spending about half their sleep in it while low-plasticity species have very little.

Is dreaming truly universal across animals?

Yes; versions of REM show up from fish to mammals, and even blind species still run this ancient circuitry to keep visual areas active.

So beyond protecting tissue, are dreams largely without purpose?

Mostly; random signals can feel insightful now and then, but most dreams are odd fragments with no real use.

What big idea did we miss that would help people get better at life and brain use?

Practice real dialogue that maps the other person’s model of the world. Complicate in-group labels and keep eye contact and conversation so your social circuits keep seeing a person, not an object.

If I want to stave off dementia, what should I do?

Keep learning and switch tasks once they feel easy, because novelty forces the brain to lay fresh pathways that can carry you even as others decay.

And what should I steer clear of?

Prioritize sleep and diet, and be mindful with alcohol; culture is drinking less, though some miss the social lubricant, so find a balanced way to connect.

Our last guest left you this: what do you wish most for the planet in the next decade?

Less polarization through richer, cross-cut identities and more rooms where political opposites actually talk, with AI nudging us to meet real people behind the labels.

The macro trend looks like splintered platforms and interest-driven feeds that tighten echo chambers, with algorithms chasing retention over connection.

Echo chambers are old, but the internet at least reveals the spectrum of views, which beats a single state story even if some of it is wild.

Is there a middle path where algorithms ease up and do not just reinforce what we already believe?

I expect a platform will win by matching people on shared loves and only later surfacing disagreements, sequencing interactions to build trust and connection instead of outrage.

That sounds less dopaminergic than a slot-machine feed, so would people return and would ads work?

We do not live at the slot machine all day; we crave meaningful ties, and a service that delivers them can be sticky without stoking rage.

It is that cookie versus salad tug-of-war again.

Right, and most days we still choose the salad.
