A quick screen is waist size—about forty inches or more in men, thirty‑five or more in women—while a DEXA scan can measure it directly; aim for under three hundred grams, the closer to zero the better.
Drivers include aging and hormones, but lifestyle hits hard: two weeks of four‑hour nights in healthy young men raised visceral fat by approximately eleven percent with no change on the scale.

Lifestyle matters—sleep, sugar, and missing micronutrients—but the big modern culprit is endocrine‑disrupting chemicals like BPA, phthalates, and PFAS that meddle with sex and thyroid hormones.
Are these really in everyday stuff like clothing and cookware?
PFAS show up in non‑stick coatings and water‑repellent finishes, BPA and its cousins line cups and cans and live in plastics, and phthalates make plastics flexible and concentrate in fatty foods, and the evidence links them to lower testosterone, impaired sperm, thyroid issues, and earlier menopause.
