About this episode

This episode is part of a series called  Meditation Monday . The teacher, Henry Shukman, has been on my podcast twice before. He is one of only a few dozen masters in the world authorized to teach Sanbo Zen, and now, he’ll be your teacher. In addition to my long-form interviews each week, every Monday I’ll bring you a short 10-minute or so meditation, which will help you for the rest of the week. Over this four-episode series, you’ll develop a Zen toolkit to help you find greater calm, peace, and effectiveness in your daily life. Henry’s app,  The Way , has changed my life since I first started using it. Unlike other meditation apps, where you’re overwhelmed with a thousand choices, The Way is a clear step-by-step training program guided entirely by Henry. Through a logical progression, you’ll develop real skills that stick with you. I’ve been using it daily, often twice a day, and it’s lowered my anxiety more than I thought possible. Episode summary

Hello, friends—Tim Ferriss here. Welcome to a new experiment called Meditation Monday: short ten-minute practices alongside the weekly interviews, a four-part run to build a Zen toolkit for more calm, ease, and effectiveness, guided by Henry Shukman, a rare authorized teacher of Sanbo Zen who’s appeared here twice.

Today I’m inviting a different track of meditation, the kind that does less. Rather than adding techniques, we’ll practice releasing effort and returning to the innate ease and well-being that’s already here.

Settle into a comfortable seat with relaxed hands and an aligned head and spine, eyes closed or softly lowered. Think of it as welcoming stillness—do nothing and let the hush arrive on its own, like a tide you’ve been waiting for.

Unplug from the day and rest in simple awareness, a brief refuge you can revisit anytime. Sense the body’s stillness, notice the restful quality of being, and give yourself explicit permission to do nothing while your to-do list waits its turn.

Doing less lets the whole system power down and naturally recharge, and it reconnects you with something basic and trustworthy in who you are. Stay with that ease for these few minutes.

When you’re ready, gently move toes and fingers, lift your gaze, look around, and, if it feels good, take a small stretch. Thanks for practicing with me today; next time we’ll explore how to work with this practice further.
