Welcome to Huberman Lab Essentials. Today I’ll give you a practical framework for dopamine, epinephrine—adrenaline—serotonin, and acetylcholine. These chemicals help determine which neural circuits are active.
During roughly the first nine hours after waking, dopamine and epinephrine are generally highest; later they taper while serotonin rises. Acetylcholine depends less on time of day and more on focused learning. Dopamine supports motivation and pursuit, epinephrine forward-driving energy, serotonin comfort and having enough, and acetylcholine focus and plasticity.
Support dopamine with outdoor light early in the day—never stare at anything painfully bright—and use behavioral tools consistently. Caffeine increases alertness and can make dopamine signaling more effective; cold exposure can sustain dopamine and adrenaline. Don’t use every tool at once: adjust to sleep, travel, diet, and your day’s demands. Be especially cautious if you have depression, mania, or take related medications.
Movement—walking, lifting, running, swimming, even talking—raises epinephrine. Caffeine, intense exercise, cold, and cyclic deep breathing can push it higher, but approach breathing carefully if prone to panic. For acetylcholine, eat choline-rich foods: eggs, meat, soy, fish, mushrooms, or beans. Nicotine can enhance cognition, but smoking is terrible and addictive.
Serotonin supports well-being, soothing, and satiety. Physical contact and gratitude can help. Tryptophan foods are precursors; I’ve found occasional nighttime myo-inositol helpful for sleep.
