As a parent, what skills or paths are you steering your kid toward?
We homeschool a ten-year-old and focus on becoming a super-empowered individual—AI takes people who are good and makes them great—so the goal is depth plus the ability to wield these tools; cultivate agency.
Agency shows up a lot—how do you think about building it?
Our culture over-trains rule-following; kids need structure but also initiative, the willingness to lead and own outcomes, and AI is the lever that lets someone with agency contribute meaningfully across fields.
That lever idea reminds me of alchemy.
Early scientists chased a mythical transmutation; AI actually does it by turning silicon into cognition, so I want my kid fluent with this ‘philosopher’s stone’ rather than shielded from it.
For parents without resources to homeschool, what’s practical?
One-on-one tutoring is the proven gold standard and AI finally makes it accessible; pair school with AI tutors that adapt, quiz, and explain, and look at hybrid models like Alpha that build around this.
So are young people in trouble, or do they benefit most?
Focus on tasks, not jobs; faster productivity historically means more creation and hiring, and with fewer workers and likely lower immigration, remaining humans become more valuable.
Is it the timing that prevents mass job loss?
Without AI, depopulation would shrink economies; with it, output rises and prices fall, which makes society richer and safety nets cheaper, and even if change is incremental the story is broadly positive.
Your track record on big calls is strong, which is why I’m excited to ask more.
I’ve missed plenty, and I now give more weight to Peter’s bits-versus-atoms critique; real-world change has been throttled by regulation and cartels, especially in healthcare, though AI could force us to reopen the rules.
Many listeners are PMs, engineers, and designers—what happens to these roles?
We’ve got a Mexican standoff where each believes AI lets them do the others’ jobs, and they’re largely right; the edge goes to cross-skilled, AI-amplified builders who can own product end to end.
So being great still wins?
Yes, and greatness means mastering AI and swapping in new tasks as bundles evolve, much like email reshaped what executives and admins actually do.
Software engineering feels like it’s flipping fast.
Coding keeps abstracting—from calculators to punch cards to scripting to orchestrating code bots—and you still need depth to judge, correct, and guide what the agents generate.
Is learning to code still worth it?
If you want to be elite, absolutely; know the stack down to fundamentals and how the models work, and use AI as your fastest teacher when you hit gaps.
Design taste seems hardest to acquire.
AI will flood you with assets, but the high-order job is deciding what fits human lives and feels right, and the tools free more time for that judgment.
What are the most AI-native founders doing differently?
They’re reinventing products, supercharging team roles and size, and exploring company shapes where a founder directs fleets of agents or services run autonomously on-chain.
One-person unicorns still feel unrealistic given messy edge cases.
Edge cases are sticky, yet tiny-team outliers like Bitcoin prove what’s possible, and top founders are probing how far the boundary can move.
How do you think about moats in AI right now?
It’s too early for certainties; labs leapfrog, open source compresses gaps, value could accrue to models or apps depending on how the system adapts, so stay flexible.
Does winning mean placing many bets?
Our approach is indeterminate optimism: back many determined optimists with concrete plans and let experimentation surface the winners.
Does AGI change your thesis?
The sci-fi singularity feels unlikely soon, and a narrow economic definition undershoots the reality; models will surpass human ceilings—think beyond 160 IQ—in coding, medicine, law, and more, which is great for progress.
I could keep you here all day, Mark, but to wrap, tell me about your media and product diet—what you actually read, watch, and use right now.
I split my intake between real‑time feeds and old books that have proven their worth, and I mostly skip the middle. If you reread last week’s paper, the forecasts rarely hold up, so I’d rather pair immediacy with timelessness.
I also prioritize practitioners—newsletters and podcasts where the people doing the work explain it directly. There’s real edge in hearing top operators think out loud, even if they occasionally talk their book.
Tech’s sharing culture still blows my mind—so much gold, and it’s free.
Silicon Valley can feel like a company town where the company is the industry itself—terrible for keeping secrets as a CEO, magical for learning and hiring. That adaptability is why the region kept morphing from chips to the internet, smartphones, cloud, and now AI, powered by a kind of open‑ended optimism.
It’s the meme that we’re all just wrappers over sand.
Totally—I joke I’m a chip wrapper or a database wrapper; we’re all sand wrappers now.
Ben says you’re deep into movies—what recently floored you?
Eddington absolutely knocked me out—best of the decade for me. Set in a tiny New Mexico town with Joaquin Phoenix as a crusty sheriff and Pedro Pascal as a progressive mayor, it tracks the first months of 2020 through COVID, the protests, and a Meta‑like company building an AI data center, and it nails how people lived those events mostly online; it is brave, sharp about phones and social media, and wildly entertaining—I think everyone should see it.
How about your product diet—any lesser‑known tools you love?
My ten‑year‑old organically discovered Replit and is hooked on building games for hours, which has been a joy to watch. I’m also obsessed with AI voice—Grok’s Bad Rudy raccoon is my party trick, Sesame showed how intimate voice can feel, wearables and voice pendants are coming fast, and Whisper Flow on my phone does stellar transcription while understanding instructions like “make this bullet points,” which makes voice mode genuinely useful.
What’s the coolest thing your kid built?
Star Trek simulators. Next Generation actually had a real UI language, LCARS, and with AI coding he can spin up bridge consoles in that style and wrap them around whatever game he wants—it’s catnip for him.
