About this episode

Are you letting the past or fear of failure hold you back from achieving ultimate business success? Dana White, the relentless CEO behind the UFC, reveals the exact psychological frameworks and savage business tactics required to dominate your industry and build an empire.
Dana White is the President of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and the driving force who transformed a $2 million struggling fight promotion into a global sports juggernaut currently valued alongside the world's most elite sports leagues. Now expanding his empire into Power Slap and Zuffa Boxing, White has mastered the brutal mechanics of scaling businesses in highly competitive, chaotic environments.
In this episode, he explains:

■ The Loyalty Mandate: How treating business like a literal war requires building a tight-knit team of absolute "killers".
■ Biohacking as an Asset: The radical 12 week protocol of cold plunging, fasting, and targeted supplementation reversed his debilitating sleep apnea and fundamentally rewired his baseline energy for peak performance.
■ The Myth of "Making It": Why true entrepreneurs must become addicted to solving daily chaos to stay ahead of competitors and reach the top of your industry.
■ Weaponizing Your Gut: The exact mindset shift required to take massive risks when everyone else claims your vision is entirely impossible.

Episode summary

This AI-generated Shortcast summary may omit nuance. Use the original episode when context or exact wording matters.

I bought the UFC for two million dollars, and the scale of what we built is crazy. If the Lakers can sell for twelve and a half billion, this thing is worth fifty billion. I show up to win every damn day, and I’m addicted to chaos. If life isn’t giving me enough, I’ll create some.

You deal with fighters, giant-company CEOs, and world leaders, but you still come across obsessed with the fight itself. What made you such a relentless fighter in business?

I don’t know how to answer childhood questions the way people want me to. I didn’t grow up like a lot of fighters, but I knew young that combat sports were where I belonged. I don’t buy victim stuff: everyone around you can show you what to do or exactly what not to do.

I watched drinking hurt people close to me, so when I turned twenty-one, I quit. My mom was a beast—nursing shifts, extra work, school—and my sister and I were close because it was basically us. My father was absent and selfish; I remember him showing up drunk to take us to Beverly Hills Cop and turning the whole night into a scene.

Having kids made something click: this is how you’re supposed to feel about your children. My parents made me better at being a parent. I like winning, but I try to meet my obligations at work, at home, with my kids. Nobody’s perfect, but I’ve tried to be good at every role I have.

As a teenager, I walked away from a hotel job with cash, benefits, medical, dental—the whole deal. I hated reporting to people and how that industry treated workers. I didn’t know what the fight business would become, but I knew I wanted in. After all the lawn, pool, and bushes at home, I thought, the minute I earn money, I’m not doing this shit anymore.

I make my kids understand real labor. My son had a business idea, and I liked it, but he wasn’t quitting school and floating around. Get a job too, because if I’m gone tomorrow, that’s what you’re qualified for. Construction crews in Vegas heat or winter cold—that’s hard work. Their job is physical punishment every day.

If you start a business because you want free time, you picked the wrong game. Problems hit before you arrive, then there’s a pile of bullshit at work. I’m in the office from around eight-thirty until late because the best ideas happen when talented people are together, talking through problems. I’m calmer now, but I don’t want to get soft. Nobody owes you anything; somebody can open a door, but you still have to deliver.

Most people aren’t built to be entrepreneurs. Other people’s families rely on you, and I take that seriously. We bought the UFC cheap because almost nobody believed in it, then found people who believed enough to come to Vegas and build it. You need great matchmaking, live events people remember, television done right, and a brand networks and sponsors trust.

No one person does all of it. At first I wore every hat; my superpower became recognizing who fits the mission. I need talent, work ethic, drive, and people who see the same destination. I’m a fight fan at the core, so I judge the product like the customer. At events, I’ve got a phone to the production truck: if something sucks, ‘Let’s never do that again.’ If it’s great, I tell them that too. No drama.

During COVID, I wasn’t throwing people overboard to make numbers prettier. If you felt unsafe, go home. Nobody left. I checked in weekly: call me first if you need groceries or have a sick family member. Your job as CEO is to find a way through hard times without treating loyal people like disposable numbers.

Getting to the top is easier than staying there. Everybody studies you, copies you, steals at your people—and I love that shit. I focus on three things every day. Distractions, movie ideas, ego stuff: that’s where companies make mistakes and somebody comes for their lunch. I’ll listen to fans and critics with a real point, but a card isn’t bad before it happens. Let the fights play out.

At fifty, Gary Brecka changed my life. He gave me twelve weeks; by six, I felt incredible. My sleep apnea was gone, and I had more clarity and energy. I don’t think I could run at this level without that change. Killer instinct means recognizing when it’s time to go. I want sponsors and partners to win with us, not rent space for a logo.

I hate living in the rearview mirror. Take the lesson, then move. I respect that my mother raised two kids alone, worked her ass off, and drove us from Boston to Vegas with a dog in the car. Later she published an unauthorized book with private photos, including my wedding pictures. It was the beginning of the end between us. Family can hurt you worse than strangers, but good, bad, whatever—it made me who I am.

Trust your gut, but understand the downside. When I left the hotel at nineteen, the worst outcome was going back to work. The horrible thing is hitting forty-five and wondering why you never took your shot. Timing matters too: at a high-school friend’s wedding, I ran into Lorenzo Fertitta. He trained at my gym, and we stayed together from there.

Don’t be scared to gamble on what you want. Not everybody needs to be an entrepreneur; plenty of people want the steady job, weekends, benefits. Nothing wrong with that. But if you know you’re a builder, go get it, because it will cost you. There’s no finish line for me. I love a room full of creative killers turning a vision real.

I’ve built the biggest fight brand ever. Over this Paramount deal, I want boxing, Power Slap, and everything else at a level nobody can reproduce after I’m gone. At the UFC, you can’t say no. People said the UFC and Power Slap were impossible too. Boxing was my first love, it’s broken, and I know what needs fixing. Watch what we do.
