About this episode

It's been one year of SOLVED. 20 episodes, 20 million downloads, 3 million YouTube subscribers, and a truly unreasonable number of poop jokes. To celebrate, I sat down with over 200 of your questions and picked the ones that hit the hardest. We get into why most people fail at quitting addictions (hint: the problem isn't the feelings, it's that you never planned for them). I explain why, if you have ADHD and can't stop procrastinating, you need to treat yourself like a dog that shits on the carpet. We talk about the real science behind manifestation, why it sort of works but not for the reason TikTok thinks it does. I break down the difference between trait confidence and state confidence, and why "build evidence" is only half the equation. We cover how to handle panic attacks, getting over a "perfect" ex (spoiler: they're not perfect, and thinking they are is the problem), the uncomfortable truth about self-love, the difference between a boring relationship and being bored in a relationship, the purpose vs. money question, what FIRE retirees never tell you, and what I'd reincarnate as. Plus some big announcements: we're going back to the mega episode format in June, the PDF guides are returning, and our first topic is going to be how to actually change your life. Episode summary

Welcome back to The Solved Podcast, the last show you’ll ever need; we’re celebrating one year, twenty episodes, over twenty million downloads, three million subscribers, and yes, many terrible poop jokes.

Quick housekeeping: we tried shorter formats, but starting in June we’re returning to one deep, everything-you-need episode each month, with YouTube split into parts while Apple and Spotify get the full drop on day one, and the PDF guides are back.

Before that, watch for a research-packed anxiety episode and one on why people stay in bad relationships, both a bit shorter, then we go all-in again in June.

On addiction and relapse, your feelings aren’t the problem; the lack of systems is, so build accountability, plan for the ugly days, and swap the destructive habit for a safer compulsion that can carry you through urges.

If you procrastinate with ADHD, assume your inner animal will chase fun every time, so fence off temptations and redesign your environment; I once sold my consoles because I realized I could not keep grades, a social life, and gaming all at once.

Manifestation only makes sense as attention training: focus primes the reticular activating system to notice relevant cues, but nothing arrives without action, plans, and follow-through; the universe is not your delivery service.

Confidence has two layers: state confidence grows with reps at a specific skill, while trait confidence is the deeper belief you can handle setbacks, often shaped early, and rebuildable later with support and hard practice.

Will the old blog return? No, but I launched a Substack at markmanson.substack.com and I’m having fun with it.

Torn between an IT degree and fitness coaching? Do both at modest levels; finish the degree for doors that stay open and test training as a side gig to see if you truly want it, and if you’re under twenty-five, it’s not too late for anything.

For panic attacks, stop fighting them and they lose power, and if you’re hitting those I am going to die surges regularly, talk to a professional.

When family never reaches out unless you do, you cannot fix them; accept who they are, drop the guilt trips, and make the time you do get as light and good as possible.

You cannot get over a perfect ex because perfection is a fantasy; knock them off the pedestal and see the real, complicated human so both of you can breathe again.

Purpose, my AI coaching app, is built to challenge your blind spots and help with hard choices, and the Android version is basically here.

Self-love is not a bubble bath; it is doing the boring, protective stuff for yourself on schedule so you’re strong enough to face rejection and failure when they come.

If nothing feels like an accomplishment and your losses stick, use a simple gratitude practice to retrain attention and give yourself earned credit.

On religion, I grew up deeply Christian, practiced Buddhism in school, spent time around Judaism, studied Islam, and I’m probably the most pro-community atheist you will meet; a careful religion episode is on my long list.

If endless positivity finally hit a gray patch, good; real optimism accounts for trade-offs and sacrifice, and this lull may be you stepping into the truth.

Commitment issues feel like whiplash between craving closeness and bolting, while not being into someone just feels flat; a relationship can be quiet and still feel deeply satisfying.

Money versus purpose depends on where you are: below basic needs, chase stability; in the middle, both matter; once financially safe, meaning takes over.

Maladaptive daydreaming is often an OCD cousin, so treat the fantasies like a compulsion; I cover a real case in the audio book Love Is Not Enough.

June’s mega episode is on change, and some fans of MBTI and the Enneagram may not love what we found.

Friendships improve when you both grow, because we co-regulate and either rise together or slowly drift apart.

Morning pages help some people; I journal when life is on fire, my mornings are energy drink, desk, work, and I do not worship routines.

New book updates will come when I actually have time to write again.

On alcohol, I broke my streak for a special night with old friends, had a blast, and now I pick my spots carefully and generally do not start unless it truly adds value.

Changing your mind is healthy; be honest when something is not working and try a new path without ego.

Rock bottom’s psychology will be in the change episode, and it is fascinating.

On moving often versus planting roots, travel and living abroad teach you more than you expect, but you pay in community and routines, so set a time limit and, if you go, go far.

If you would rather hit Hooters than your wife’s birthday, I deadpan that you should file for divorce now because it is coming anyway.

For FIRE folks nearing forty, do not retire into a vacuum; plan structure, take a short victory lap, then lean into projects, volunteering, or part-time work because many quietly return for meaning.

Purpose anxiety calms when you treat purpose as something built backward; follow curiosity, do what feels worth doing today, and the story will take shape.

If I could reincarnate, I would come back as a house cat because zero expectations, maximum naps, and unconditional adoration is the pinnacle of existence.

Thanks for an amazing first year; subscribe or follow so you actually see the monthly drops, the summer episodes are big, and I cannot wait to share what is next.
