About this episode

Are we secretly sleepwalking into the most dangerous 8 weeks of our lifetimes? Professor Robert Pape reveals why the coming months could trigger unprecedented political violence and war escalation, and what it means for the future of global stability.

Robert Pape is a renowned political scientist who has spent the last 30 years studying global political violence and advising every US White House since 9/11. He is the author of several definitive books on military strategy and political instability, including his most recent work, Our Own Worst Enemies. His extensive research seeks to understand the root causes of violent populism and provide actionable frameworks to prevent geopolitical escalation traps.

This episode was recorded on October 29, 2026.

In this episode, he explains:
■ The Escalation Trap: Why international conflict is less like a strategic game of chess and more like a desperate gambler playing roulette to chase their mounting losses.
■ The "Instant Thunder" Threat: How a seemingly brief three-day aerial bombing plan could rapidly spiral into a prolonged war that paralyzes global infrastructure.
■ The Wildfire of Violent Populism: Why tens of millions of politically divided citizens currently act as combustible material waiting for a single structural spark to ignite widespread violence.
■ Invoking the Insurrection Act: The terrifying sequence of events that could legally place military troops on domestic streets to suppress protests during a transfer of power.
■ The Three Core Firebreaks: The specific demands ordinary citizens and global politicians must make to de-escalate tensions and prevent regional proxy battles from turning into World War Three.

Episode summary

This AI-generated Shortcast summary may omit nuance. Use the original episode when context or exact wording matters.

Robert, every time we sit down, I begin in the same place: what the hell is happening? For listeners outside America, a midterm is the election halfway through a presidency: the president serves four years, Congress is elected every two.

It is not merely about passing laws, Stephen. Congress, president, and courts restrain one another. If Trump’s party loses a chamber—especially both—his agenda, Cabinet, and legacy face subpoenas, investigations, and impeachment pressure. The dangerous window is after voting, while ballots are counted, certified, and power changes hands.

I call this violent populism: violence has moved beyond a fringe into millions willing to endorse force for political ends. Our surveys show more than 40 million backing military force against anti-Trump protesters, and more than 60 million backing force to prevent Trump holding power. That is dry timber; the spark is unpredictable.

January 6 shows the mechanism: a leader summons a crowd, directs its attention, and one further message can turn anger into action. I am not predicting a particular spark. I am saying the transition is uniquely hazardous, and shocks, protests, or confrontations with federal agents could worsen it.

And this domestic pressure is colliding with the Iran war. Trump has framed a choice between a deal and action. Reporting describes contingency plans for a rapid, intense seventy-two-hour campaign against missile, drone, command, and energy targets.

Three days is profoundly misleading. The reported targets resemble the opening logic of the 1991 Iraq air campaign: leadership, infrastructure, refineries, bridges, economic power. Embassy families have been pulled from parts of the region, and CENTCOM is reportedly preparing for a quick go order. That is preparation, not proof.

An escalation trap is when a stronger state wins tactically but becomes strategically weaker. Bombs may hit targets, but the weaker side refuses to concede and gains leverage. Think roulette, not chess: after losing, the gambler raises the stake. Here the chips are fuel prices, economic pain, public support, and political standing.

A short campaign can become a long one. The Iraq model was meant to be brief and ran forty-three days without fully paralyzing the adversary. If Iran retaliates against regional airports, infrastructure, or personnel, you have damaged leaders with whom you hoped to negotiate and created incentives for more attacks. Civilians could die in very large numbers.

I distinguish command-directed attacks from inspired ones. The Tel Aviv-bound flight incident cannot be known with certainty to be state-directed. But the timing, apparent ritual, and alleged attempt to seize control near Tel Aviv make me judge mass killing highly likely. That is decentralised violence escalation can encourage.

Putin’s minimum goal is not a photo opportunity. He wants Ukrainian territory Russia has claimed but not taken. Trump cannot simply hand it over, and Zelensky surrendering more land could be politically and personally perilous. If Moscow cannot get territory through pressure, it may intensify winter attacks on power systems in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Odesa.

These are not separate tracks. A worsening Iran conflict raises energy costs and aggravates tense politics; Russia-Ukraine escalation can do the same. Britain’s household-preparedness messaging reflects concern about disruption, including cyberattacks, not necessarily intelligence that something happens tomorrow. Three days of supplies may help a short outage, not repeated attacks or panic.

The grave threshold is direct conflict between major powers, not decades of proxy war. If serious cyberattacks hit Britain or Europe and publics demand retaliation against Moscow, European and Russian forces could directly engage. That is what World War Three should mean—not simply several terrible wars existing at once.

So what are the firebreaks? Not only what governments should do, but what ordinary people can actually do besides panic-buying batteries, beans, water, and cash?

Congress should call for no further Iran escalation before the new Congress sits, unless Iran attacks first. Governors and mayors should seek a two-month pause on federally armed agents unless local leaders request them. Pakistan, Qatar, and India should press all sides not to hit civilian infrastructure or residential areas. People can call, text, and email leaders for those firebreaks.

That is where I want to end. We can argue over forecasts, but millions in Iran and Ukraine live inside the consequences, not from a studio. Your book is about America’s violent populism, and you keep bringing this back to incentives, human beings, and the cost of letting escalation run itself.

I am an optimist, Stephen. Social media spreads fear, but it can also make risks visible before decisions harden. I am honoured when people with power reach out. The best influence is not always private; plainly explaining the danger zone can help people choose a different path.
