Pop culture nudges our beliefs more than we admit, which is why people ask me the same big questions: are we alone, have we been visited, how does it all end, and where does God fit. Our curiosity may trace back to nights on our backs under the sky, watching the changing moon and roaming lights and wondering what’s out there.

Ancients filled the sky with gods, and many images of deities look pretty alien by modern standards, so our fascination with beings beyond us is old, even if we now call them extraterrestrials.

Cosmos made me feel tiny; how small are we, really?

Think in powers of ten: we’re minuscule next to galaxies and immense compared to atoms, and physics behaves differently at different scales, so you cannot just scale creatures up and expect the same rules. I do not feel small because my atoms were forged in dying stars and my calories trace to sunlight, which means I’m chemically tied to the universe and, in a real sense, solar powered.

Has everything you’ve learned changed how you relate to religion?

Belief does not require testable logic, so labels like atheist or believer flatten nuance; I engage with faith as a scientist, test claims when they touch measurable reality, and skip the titles because they shut down thinking.

Give me the origin story like I’m a teenager.

Around 13.8 billion years ago, space and time began hot and dense, then expanded and cooled so energy could become matter, stars, and galaxies; we’re still expanding. Most of what drives the cosmos is unknown stuff we nickname dark matter and dark energy, and a multiverse could sit beyond our horizon, which is why humility at the frontier matters.

What is dark energy in plain terms, and how do you chase it?

It’s a pressure in empty space making expansion speed up when gravity says slow down, and new telescopes are mapping its history across time; honestly we should call it something neutral, because names like dark energy and dark matter tempt us to pretend we understand them.

Obama joked about aliens, Trump stoked it, files were released, interest spiked; do you think intelligent life exists?

Given how quickly life arose on Earth, the sheer number of stars and worlds, and the age of the galaxy, I see no reason it would be unique to us, though proof means bodies, biology, or tech you can hold. The cosmos may even be infinite, so let’s keep our egos in check and our standards of evidence high.

Explain a black hole like I’m twelve.

If gravity is strong enough that escape speed equals light speed, not even light gets out, which defines a boundary called the event horizon; cross it and every path out folds back in. Time slows for you as you fall, you’d watch the universe’s future race by, and tidal forces would stretch you into strands before crushing you toward a center our equations cannot yet describe.

Could there be intelligent life here in the Milky Way, and if so, why have they not visited; also, how bad is our space junk problem?

The fastest probe we launched would need around fifty thousand years to reach the nearest star, so interstellar travel is brutally hard and debris around Earth is already risky enough to trigger cascade collisions if we are careless. Astronomers now fight satellite streaks in their images, space law is playing catch‑up, and serious observing may shift to orbit or the Moon.

Why are we racing back to the Moon, and is there real upside?

Geopolitics lit the fuse when China set its sights on it, so Artemis is more about national posture than pure science, though polar ice, in‑place resources, and future tourism could unlock economics once there is infrastructure. Without air you bake on the sun‑side and freeze in shadow, so you solve it with insulation and engineering, then you can imagine hotels and weekend trips.

Did any of the UFO footage convince you?

Most sightings have mundane causes, a few are genuinely puzzling like the tic‑tac, but low‑res blobs plus testimony is not the same as a specimen on a table, and Hollywood has biased us toward humanoids when nonhuman forms are likelier. Brain chemistry and culture shape what people report, which is why I lean on instruments and repeatable measurements over altered states.

If a few chemicals can rewrite perception, how do you trust reality, and what about shared DMT visions?

Science extends our senses with detectors so groups can agree on results that do not depend on anyone’s mood or retina, and that is how we anchor objective reality. If psychedelics truly opened the same external channel, coordinated experiments should recover matching information; until then, I will chase truth with tools, not trips.

Are we living in a simulation?

If simulated worlds breed more simulations, a random dart should hit a copy, but every link in that chain could program a new universe, and we cannot, which makes us either the original or the last before we gain that power. Exponential growth makes every generation feel uniquely special, so I keep the odds simple and my mind open.

What is the point of life?

I do not hunt for meaning under rocks; I make it by learning something new every day and by reducing someone else’s burden, ideally in ways that ripple outward. Do a favor and pass it forward so the benefit travels through society instead of closing the loop with payback.

You’ve sparked my curiosity for years, and schools rarely teach that; how do you want to be remembered?

Skip the statues; judge my work by the minds it lifted, and if you need a headstone line, try a rephrased Horace Mann: do not leave this world before you have earned a win for humanity.

On first contact, do not project our habits onto them; sleep could be bizarre to a species that never rests, and grabbing an appendage might be like seizing the wrong body part. If they landed on a Los Angeles freeway, they might think cars are the dominant organism and we are the soft cargo, which is the kind of mental flip my book uses to reset our assumptions and keep the wonder alive.
