I’ve been stuck on big questions lately, and your takes on simulation theory pulled me right in.

Given where computing can go, it’s easy to picture worlds inside worlds where beings think they choose, so the odds lean toward us being simulated, but since we can’t yet build a flawless one, I put it closer to a coin flip. The steady stream of big plot twists can even feel like a programmer keeping things interesting, like SimCity when a monster levels your town.

I’d rather believe I have free will.

It doesn’t change how you live; act so the world is better for you having been here. I stopped searching for meaning and started making it by learning every day, turning knowledge into wisdom, easing suffering, and aiming to leave a clear win for humanity.

A lot of billionaires want to outlive death; are we close to indefinite life?

Think of aging escape velocity, where each year of progress adds at least a year to your life. I don’t want forever, just time to contribute, and while end of life choices are personal—I watched my mom choose hospice—hoarding centuries would drain resources and freeze culture when we most need fresh minds.

Your books even fed the new models; how do you see AI in science and the creative shock it caused?

AI has long been a workhorse in the physical sciences; telescopes like Rubin rely on it to sift data and flag the weird stuff fast. In the arts it will raise the bar, because copying a style is easy, but true originality—leaps no one expects—will be the human frontier.

Are we merging with machines now, with things like Neuralink to keep pace with superintelligence?

If superintelligence shows up, we become its pets, which might be kinder than how we treat many humans. History keeps warning me not to call this a singular moment, because almost every era thought it was living through one.

What are the odds I reach another planet in my lifetime?

Zero without a hard geopolitical or economic reason; we went to the moon to beat the Soviets, Artemis stirred when China eyed the moon, and Mars has no comparable driver. There’s no solid business case, the trip is long and expensive—think the moon thirty feet away and Mars a mile—and private rockets can’t change that math on their own.

Even if Elon pushed it as a passion project, he still has a clock.

That just adds urgency for him, but near term tourism to orbit or a weeklong moon trip is far more plausible than Mars.
