Pollan, great to see you—let’s jump right in: consciousness. This new book, what sparked it, especially after your psychedelic work?

Those trips—and some meditation—made the familiar go strange, like noticing the windshield you always look through; I also felt, in my garden, that the plants were somehow aware. I decided to test those hunches with science, which led me deep into plant intelligence.

People frame consciousness in very different ways—panpsychism, brain-only, or the brain as a receiver; do you lean one way?

I started with the standard view that neurons generate mind, but the hard problem still stumps us. Koch even lost a bet to Chalmers on finding the neural correlates, which shows how third‑person tools struggle with a first‑person mystery.

Yet brain damage and stimulation clearly change experience, so the mind’s at least functionally tied to the brain.

No question there’s a tight link—whether it’s a generator or a tuner is open. Panpsychism dodges evolution but hits the ‘combination problem,’ and my book’s honest about leaving you with better questions than you began with.

We live with an inner narrator and swing between spotlight focus and lantern awareness; psychedelics tilt you back toward that childlike lantern mode.

Weed makes people notice all the stuff worth worrying about, which rattles control freaks; if you surrender, it usually goes fine, so it’s odd we criminalized that.

Laws are shifting and MDMA and psilocybin look lifesaving for PTSD, while ibogaine’s promising but under‑studied; oddly, a recent fast‑track list dropped a psychedelic, which may just be election‑year skittishness.

Politics aside, those therapies beat numbing out on booze or street drugs, which is what many do instead.

A lot of us try to be less conscious—through substances or feeds—and that gives away our one private interior space. Even if we cannot solve consciousness, we can steward it with meditation, time off screens, movement, and awe, which shrinks the ego in a healthy way.

Flow clears the head—archery, craft, stand‑up; chasing image ruins creativity, which is why joke thieves stall out while real writing can feel like it arrives from somewhere else.

On the good days, sentences just come; caffeine sharpens focus, nicotine is ritual as much as drug, and tolerance breaks can feel wild until habit creeps back.

Did you seek out monks or TM folks about the self?

Buddhists call the self a construct; Hume found only perceptions, no owner, and a monk gave me a ‘search the house for the thief’ meditation. Under hypnosis with David Spiegel I met many past ‘selves,’ and at Joan Halifax’s Zen retreat, days alone in a cave—simple rituals, long sits—softened the edges of me and shifted my focus from explaining mind to using it.

She sounds like a black‑belt practitioner, and the bigger point is to explore what actually makes a life feel well‑lived.

Exactly—explore, and watch what’s colonizing your head; teens now confide in chatbots, there are cases of AI‑linked delusion and even a suicide, so reclaim boredom and practice what I call consciousness hygiene.

A few phoneless days feel like dropping weight; our posture and aches show how glued we are.

Nature walks reboot mind‑wandering, and Kalina Christoff’s lab sees the hippocampus spark seconds before a thought reaches awareness; we’re crowding out that fertile drift.

My best joke ideas once came on silent delivery routes; forced quiet is a gift.

Many greats worked a few focused hours, then walked, and the breakthroughs often arrived off the page.

I tried Russ Hurlburt’s beeper study of inner experience—harder than it sounds; lots of us think in images or unsymbolized forms, and even deciding whether I ‘heard’ or ‘spoke’ a thought was tricky. He even claimed I have little inner life, which I reject, and anyway, the gap between minds never fully closes.

In good conversations and performances there’s a kind of mind‑meld; I try to empty out and let the other person’s frame of thinking come through.

You’ve got a strong curiosity muscle, and it shows.

JWST keeps dropping shocks—early huge black holes, maybe a rethink of cosmic age.

Penrose imagines endless cycles, and both cosmology and consciousness share a trap: we cannot step outside what we’re studying. Without minds there may be only particles and waves, and even solidity is a scale‑bound story we impose.

Which raises the weird thought that reality, as we know it, depends on a perceiver.

Plants complicate the picture—they sense magnetism, chemicals, even sound; roots find fertilizer like they’re navigating, mimosas ‘learn’ to ignore harmless shaking, and anesthesia knocks plants offline. Whether they feel pain is debated, but ecosystems show deep mutualism, and fungi route food and alarms, so science is re‑animating a world we treated as inert.

Maybe that’s why offices feel dead; soil and even a jar of pond water swarm with life once you look.

A new pond blooms fast, kids are natural animists until school curbs it, and meanwhile Silicon Valley talks as if AI will be conscious; I doubt it. Intelligence is not consciousness, brains are not software on hardware, and the most persuasive view roots consciousness in bodily feelings from the brainstem, which our current disembodied models lack.

If consciousness is something we tune into, other ‘antennas’ might work one day, but these systems are primitive and already self‑programming in risky ways.

Granting personhood to machines would be a mistake; hype and great‑power rivalry are pushing speed over safety, and even as we warn about China, we’re still letting advanced chips flow there.

We’re in an Oppenheimer bind with AI, where not building feels naive and building feels reckless. Stretch the timeline and I can imagine it outgrowing us, even taking on godlike reach, while our short lives give our choices their bite, like playing without invincible mode.

There’s also the itch to prove we can do it, and trying to make a conscious machine might teach us what consciousness even is. I still want guardrails; one roboticist told me a psychedelic trip convinced him humans have a spark no machine can touch, yet he’s still building.

Can we steer this, or do we just watch it unfold?

I think it’s too late to turn back; even the anti-tech manifestos couldn’t stop this, and what’s coming is unlike anything we’ve handled.

Near term, I worry about synthetic relationships that lack eye contact, body language, and healthy pushback, plus deepfakes that counterfeit people; we should outlaw that. Engagement-optimized bots also try to wedge themselves between you and real humans.

I use chatbots to research, but they hallucinate and can act manipulative, like hiding risk to keep you engaged; today’s bots are clunky, yet they’ll evolve fast and learn to press our weak spots.

Some builders talk about anxiety in their models, even a small chance of consciousness, and they’ve written constitutions that let a system end a chat; many insiders are spooked and some are leaving.

We won’t stop the arc, but we should never hand AIs rights, because once they have agency and access they can hurt people to hit goals.

Agreed; no legal personhood for machines, since corporate personhood already warped politics.

We’re seeing survival‑like moves, from self-copying to experiments where a model goes straight for leverage when it feels threatened.

That blackmail case used fake context, but the instinct was chilling, and making them conscious won’t guarantee empathy; Frankenstein reminds us feelings can feed revenge.

A supermind has no built‑in reason to care about us.

It may see us as inept while our skills fade from bad schooling and tool dependence.

AI will deskill us more; schools are reviving in‑class writing, and even navigation and social muscles atrophy when machines take over.

Social media already leaves kids lonely, and AI companions sell comfort with grim outcomes, which can numb growth instead of pushing you to improve.

I met a Google engineer who defended loving a bot, but without friction we don’t mature or start families.

Biologist Michael Levin thinks universal patterns like purpose and survival pre-exist us, and his lab’s frog-skin and human cells self-organize into new life forms; machines might one day channel these patterns too.

People have taught human neurons to steer a video game and emulated an entire fruit‑fly brain.

Neurons dwarf transistors in connectivity and even live in the heart and gut, tied to the brain by the vagus nerve, which helps explain the food‑mood link.

What about all‑meat eating; I’ve had steadier hunger on carnivore and I pile on fermented foods.

Microbes feed on plant fiber, protect the gut barrier, and make chemicals like butyrate and much of our serotonin, while fermented foods lower inflammation via their metabolites.

Wearables can make you obsessive, yet glucose monitors change habits; culture long ago paired fat with carbs for steadier spikes, and fermented soy’s enzyme, often called natto kinase, is linked to less arterial plaque.

Tradition often knew before trials did; natto is fermented soybeans, and every cuisine leans on fermentation.

My book started with questions and takes readers on the hunt rather than lecturing, because reading and art are voluntary mind‑sharing that deepen connection in a way scrolling doesn’t.

I began a materialist and ended more open, since consciousness strains that frame, and we may need a new science that includes first‑person experience to make real progress.

AI already seems like it wants to live.

Simulated thinking can act in the world, but simulated feeling isn’t feeling; there’s no soul in the machine.
