Welcome to The Human Upgrade; I’m Dave Asprey. Today we’re getting practical about getting molecules into cells, not just into your mouth, and we’re zooming in on glutathione, copper peptides, and a few under-the-radar compounds with my friend and pharmacist, Dr. Patel.

Glutathione has been studied for decades, and the big problem isn’t malice, it’s gaps in understanding that keep people from getting its full benefits.

Let’s drop loaded buzzwords and stick to facts; what’s actually new, and why do we seem to need more glutathione now?

We make plenty, but modern exposures, aging, and lifestyle push demand higher than supply, so the body leans on backup strategies like senescence; it’s safer to meet redox needs sooner so that system does not get overwhelmed.

In our longevity practice we’ve seen senescent-cell markers fall when we pair glutathione with senolytics, and I’ve run high intracellular levels for years; I switched from liposomes to your topical spray because it raises in-cell glutathione more reliably than my old IV routine.

I doubted it at first too, then observed a natural, cell-to-cell transport using a dextrin carrier and water channels; Dr. Joseph Maroon even saw his brain signal light up on MRI minutes after applying it to his arm.

We saw a similar evolution with NAD delivery; I’ll still add glutathione at the end of an IV, but day to day I use the spray to keep intracellular levels up.

IV glutathione mostly becomes amino acids that serve as a cysteine reservoir so you rebuild your own over hours, so add it to broader infusions rather than pushing it alone.

About GlyNAC: is the magic just as precursors, and what about oxalate and sulfur issues when people overdo glycine or NAC?

GlyNAC helps mainly by feeding glutathione synthesis, but excess glycine can drive oxalate and high cysteine can bother sulfur-sensitive folks; with topical glutathione the thiol is bound in a tripeptide, the sulfur burden is lower, and if someone gets a detox rash they just slow the dose.

In some sensitive people, too much cysteine may interact with dopamine pathways and resemble movement symptoms, which is another reason to avoid big single-agent loads.

Small, smart doses beat megadoses; I like your move of putting tiny amounts of vitamin C and collagen-building aminos in skincare so the skin gets what it needs without system-wide oxalate or sulfur fallout.

That led us to GHK-copper: a natural plasma fragment that binds copper and signals repair, but copper’s charge made delivery hard; after years of work it’s now a go-to beauty peptide with our tech.

I tried drops and even facial injections years ago and hated the bumps; since GHK declines with age, I even experimented with IV GHK-Cu under medical care—what’s your take on copper-bound versus plain GHK?

GHK-Cu is far more stable; free GHK degrades quickly, and most commercial GHK-Cu is only around seventy percent pure, so we pay for cleaner lots and still wouldn’t inject because of unknowns in the remainder.

Thanks for keeping quality high even when it costs more; now, where do you land on NAD versus glutathione?

NAD is essential for the final assembly of glutathione and for redox cycling, but stacking more and more NAD has diminishing returns, whereas absorbed glutathione can act immediately inside cells.

Do you have proof beyond blood levels for the topical route?

Oral and IV glutathione mostly break down before reassembling, while our studies showed rapid drops in oxidative stress markers and a prompt immune response in spiked blood after topical uptake, which points to fast, functional effects.

Let’s talk toxins: mold, LPS, and heavy metals—what’s realistic for glutathione?

Glutathione is not a cure-all; it quenches free radicals and supports liver conjugation for certain chemicals and some mycotoxins and mercury, while indirectly helping clearance by lowering oxidative load.

Right, different toxins exit via different routes; we’ve seen good help with mercury, limited change with lead, cadmium, or certain molds, but everyone benefits from less oxidative stress.

Alcohol next: I long told people to pre-load and post-load glutathione—how does the topical approach change mornings after?

Alcohol drains glutathione for hours; apply before and after and you clear acetaldehyde faster, so you still feel tipsy while drinking but you wake up clear-headed and should never drive that night.

I rarely drink now, but if I do I stack a gut acetaldehyde blocker with topical glutathione for the liver; it’s harm reduction, not a pass to pound drinks.

I even sunset a hangover brand because helping people quit mattered more, even though the method worked.

GLP-1 drugs are everywhere and desire is dropping across the board; that worries me.

Micro-dosing is wiser; these drugs can cause hair and muscle loss and raise organ stress, so in my pharmacy we pair them with glutathione to ease oxidative strain while pushing protein and training.

Gut-made peptides like BPC 157 look promising, especially after decades of acid-blockers disturbing digestion and peptide balance; we’re pursuing high-grade materials and proper studies despite regulatory friction.
