It’s good to be back, though I wish the craziness would quit speeding up. I want to talk solutions, but first we’ve got to be real about a crisis beyond expensive electricity: water. Wells in parts of central Texas are falling around ten feet annually, and aquifers can take centuries to recover. I’m not doing the eco-activist thing here; water is life.
I’ve got a food forest and about twelve hundred gallons of rain catchment, thank goodness. But our little Florida lakes have vanished despite rain. I can’t square that circle, so I’m left wondering whether somebody is already pulling hard from the aquifer.
Colorado is installing smart water meters that monitor use in fifteen-minute intervals, and the next version can include a shutoff or throttle. Stack control over water with power limits, food pressure, and surveillance. Nobody needs to force you anywhere if the basics become unaffordable.

I’ve been buried in Hakim’s report all week. Zillow needs a filter saying, “not near three hundred thousand Nvidia chips.” Build one beside a house and you’ve got construction, noise, turbines, and a property nobody wants.
AI is not vapor floating in “the cloud.” Every prompt sits on land and depends on substations, transmission, cooling, water, permits, tax deals, and nearby communities. Google or Microsoft’s worldwide data-center capacity was roughly four gigawatts in 2024; a single Texas project, Matador, is seeking at least seven. Our map tracks roughly four hundred U.S. hyperscalers already drawing around fifty gigawatts, with projections toward 2030 showing another four hundred and perhaps two hundred gigawatts more.
That is nuts. The proposed Texas projects alone could require tripling state electrical output in a few years. Data centers and actual humans compete for acreage, electricity, and water. At some point, are they just shutting down neighborhoods?

Click near your home and it estimates homes-equivalent power demand and daily water displacement using open assumptions. I want researchers to challenge the model; it gives people a transparent way to see what is being built around them. Heat matters too: chips transfer heat through cooling systems and vent it as hot air or steam. Then add turbine emissions and respiratory harm while ordinary people get told their lawn or car is the problem.
So what makes AI facilities different from the cloud centers we’ve used for twenty years? Netflix ran fine. The internet worked. Why does this version need to swallow whole communities?
An AI rack can be refrigerator-sized, hold seventy-two advanced chips, and draw power comparable to roughly a thousand homes. Pack hundreds into one building, then scale nationally. Some compute serves users, sure, but much appears aimed at training on the internet, cameras, commercial data, and systems like Palantir. I still can’t fully answer what they need so much compute for.
Training is huge, but so are simulations: weather, weapons, aerospace, and simulated societies. A campaign can model millions of psychological profiles to test candidates, promises, or policy. We handed over so much real behavior through Google, social platforms, and every other data vacuum.
The cloud models can be useful today, but don’t assume they’ll stay open, private, or uncensored. They’ll want identity tied to who asks what. If you don’t operate AI locally, it can be changed or used against you. I’d love to build ready-to-run machines with privacy-respecting software, although the infrastructure race remains dangerous.
That’s why local AI matters. Public U.S. models are often nerfed into approved narratives, while serious systems go to government and military use. Hardware advances could soon let people run strong models at home.
Water stays hidden because aquifer measurements are incomplete, ownership rules vary, and corporate reports often rely on estimates instead of meters. In Texas, a company may legally pump groundwater under its property at extraordinary volume. With direct-to-chip cooling, ‘closed loop’ is not the same as proving zero impact.
The real race may be against August in Arizona, not China. You cannot print water like currency. If this keeps making places hotter and drier, that’s the opponent standing right in front of us.
I don’t want to end in despair. If automation causes enormous job loss, people can be pitted against one another—or reconnect, steward land and water, and build something human again. If a facility is proposed near you, show up early and in numbers. Watch county and city agendas, read minutes, speak on the record, and organize neighbors. In San Marcos, more than a hundred people stayed through a meeting until three in the morning, and the proposal was denied.
I’d love alerts by ZIP code. If AI could watch agendas and tell me a meeting is coming, I’d go and I’d bring people. Most folks are busy, not necessarily indifferent. Give them a red flag and a place to stand.
AI may help research, but it can’t become another excuse to delegate responsibility. The human has to speak, bring friends, and hold officials accountable. Submit sightings and project information to the map. I want millions of small efforts to answer the power of a few giant companies: local food, reclaimed water, private technology, and human creativity.
