Welcome to the Huberman Lab Podcast, where we use science to build tools for everyday life; I’m Andrew Huberman, and today I’m doing a live-call Q&A, hearing your questions in real time and covering everything from training and sleep to hormones, memory, and more.
For late-day strength sessions when bedtime isn’t far off, skip caffeine and consider alpha GPC 600 to 900 milligrams to boost focus via acetylcholine; use it at most a few times per week, pair it with 600 milligrams of garlic to blunt TMAO, and expect diminishing returns if you take it daily.
Get your head right before you train, then downshift after with a hot shower, a few slow long exhales to lower heart rate, and a small protein plus starch snack like casein or oatmeal so you don’t wake up hungry at three in the morning.
Any morning ambient daylight helps set your clock—even facing west on a gray day—so lose the sunglasses and brimmed hat, never stare at painful light, and let those photons hit the retina to drive that early cortisol rise and better nighttime melatonin.
Your circadian system averages the last two to three mornings, so don’t panic if you miss one; get more light the next day, keep evenings dim, and let the biology do its job.
On optimization overwhelm, treat each day as its own puzzle: protect sleep, get early daylight, hydrate, move your body, eat mostly unprocessed foods, connect with people, and flex around real-life constraints without turning protocols into stressors.
Consistency beats perfection; pick tools you actually enjoy, do what you can sustain, and remember you’re in charge—not the protocols or anyone preaching them.
For memory, learning sticks when you’re alert and focused, you push into errors, and you sleep well; exercise mainly helps by raising arousal so the following one to six hours are primed for deliberate practice.
Self-testing outperforms rereading or highlighting; try to recall until you hit the tip-of-the-tongue point, then check answers and reconsolidate, which strengthens old memories and makes new learning easier.
You can sharpen smell by giving distinct odors real attention and taking multiple deliberate sniffs; olfactory neurons remodel with use and can recover after some injuries.
For fertility, aim for adequate—not excessive—calories; men with higher body fat should cut moderately while lifting, lean men shouldn’t diet hard, and any exogenous testosterone will suppress sperm unless countered with HCG if kids are a goal.
Women benefit from avoiding extremes of body fat and lowering chronic inflammation with minimally processed foods, quality protein, and low sugar fermented foods; L-carnitine and coenzyme Q10 can support egg quality and sperm motility, likely via mitochondrial health, while sleep and exercise remain foundational.
In perimenopause and menopause, hormone shifts can drive anxiety by changing neural circuit activity; earlier, correctly dosed hormone therapy appears more helpful than older studies suggested, so work with a clinician while tightening sleep and low-inflammation habits.
For an outdoor wedding, an afternoon or sunset ceremony fits most chronotypes and lets guests arrive rested and present; as a couple, share sunrise or sunset when you can.
Heading into surgery, be as fit and rested as possible without overreaching; afterward, protect circadian rhythm with daytime light, darkness and quiet at night, and expect strength and muscle to rebound quickly once you resume training.
To find your passion, stay structured, avoid drama and numbing, feed curiosity—no input, no output—and apprentice to the basics before adding your unique spin so you can ultimately do work that’s both skillful and truly yours.
