Live cageside in Newark, I’m fresh off UFC 328, and Sean Strickland just took the middleweight crown in a wild night.
What decided the main event?
Strickland survived the early takedown, then flipped the script with his own wrestling, and owned the standup behind a sharp jab; I wanted him to press harder in the third when Chimaev’s pace dipped, but he still banked key rounds and outlanded him cleanly despite long stretches on bottom.
Does this change how you see both guys?
Chimaev didn’t fall apart—Strickland just solved him, and that jab is a blueprint for others; it’s crazy to remember how lost Strickland looked after the Du Plessis fight, not syncing with Eric Nicksick, then he reset, beat Imavov and Hernandez, and now shocked the favorite to become champ.
Run it back soon, or move on?
I see Chimaev right back in the mix, and an immediate rematch with Strickland wouldn’t surprise me at all.
How did the co-main play out?
Joshua Van proved he’s a real flyweight champion in a thriller with Tatsuro Taira; Taira started beautifully, Van nearly closed the show in a lopsided third, Taira roared back to even it on my card, and Van sealed it late with a stoppage I thought was justified.
What else stood out on the card?
Alexander Volkov edged Waldo Cortez-Acosta but needs more to hit title talk; Sean Brady smothered Joaquin Buckley with relentless takedowns and looked like a top welterweight again; Grant Dawson scored a big win; Jim Miller added another vintage finish; Roman Kopylov and Pat Sabatini got it done; and a 30-and-1 riser deserves a top-ten test next.
Who’s your fighter of the night?
Joshua Van, for showing stout takedown defense and serious pop at 125, which makes a showdown with Pantoja even bigger.
