I had no idea you worked on the Mars rover—that’s so cool.

I’m a mechanical engineer, and at NASA I owned a chunk on top of the rover that took samples from the arm into the belly, then survived design reviews from the veteran “greybeards.” It’s wild to look up, spot that red dot, and know something I built is still rolling there, and might sit on Mars for a million years because nothing rusts or rots.

What did spaceflight teach you about getting a payload all the way to Mars?

There’s no air up there, so you burn to reach speed, then you coast and make tiny course corrections—think little puffs that change your path by fractions of a degree. Orbital slingshots are real, and the precision is insane, like driving a golf ball from New York and sinking it in Los Angeles.

Orbital dynamics in fiction made me realize how hard it is to line up angle, speed, and timing.

Space junk is a real threat, so we track anything golf‑ball sized and up, and new missions aim to clean it. We even launched a “space selfie” satellite and had to file a deorbit plan so it burns up in about five years.

Who owns space—moons, orbits, asteroids—and what happens if we suddenly flood Earth with new resources?

We’re heading for a big step change, like agriculture to industry; AI may upend jobs far beyond the main sector, including all the little roles around it.

What habits from NASA rewired how you build things?

Never start with the final version; prototype ugly, break things on purpose, learn the limits, then ship. We used that mindset to build a goalie robot that tracked a soccer ball at around 500 hertz and beat penalty shots in milliseconds.

That love for tinkering reminds me of the IKEA effect—you bond with what you build.

I try to gamify failure like a video game; a loss isn’t identity, it’s data, and you just try again. We’ve done it with trick dartboards too—tons of misses before the aha.

How do you move that mindset from experiments into life?

Kids do it naturally, and I chase mastery the same way: public speaking reps, a TED Talk on the calendar, and two years of lifting that added muscle and cut fat. It’s the thrill of leveling up.

The pump is like a preview of your future self, which keeps you coming back; how do you balance obsession with happiness?

I go deep on a few things and say no to the rest, because dopamine brains can chase more forever and never feel done. Some people are scouts who hack paths through the jungle; I’m grateful for them, but I keep my treadmill at a jog so I don’t burn out, and I’ve posted monthly for years that way.

Complexity breaks people more than pace does; piling your day high doesn’t make your capacity grow.

Some folks can parallel‑process like crazy, but most of us need a builder mode and a manager mode, or a COO who keeps trains on time. I did a stint on the Apple car after a detour building Halloween tech, which started from an iPad costume that went viral and became a business I sold.

I saw you’ve got patents—what was the big idea there?

Pair virtual or augmented reality with self‑driving cars to cut motion sickness and unlock real work or play, then lean into the car’s real motion for games. A car is the best motion simulator on Earth.

Why hasn’t AR or VR taken off yet?

Everyone says wow, then shelves the headset; it needs a killer use, like true courtside live sports or camera views you can’t buy. That’s the hook I’m still waiting for.

Why do conspiracy theories spread so easily?

We’re pattern‑hunters, and belonging and incentives keep beliefs sticky; most of us have a few we don’t poke at, even while mocking others. If you’ve never found five points to agree with from the other side, you probably haven’t listened.

I try to remember the parental attribution error too—if you blame your folks for your flaws, you should credit them for your strengths. The coin often has two sides.

In traffic we dehumanize; in a line we’re kinder because we see a person, and online the cost of rudeness is near zero. Travel magnifies it—tight connections spike stress—so we saw chaos at an airport when people started cutting.

I add a ninety‑minute buffer on connections for exactly that reason, and I’ve read that walking economy past first class raises air‑rage because it rubs status in people’s faces.

AR feels closer than VR for daily use—directions mapped onto the street, instant translation, subtle memory prompts for names. Super useful, even if society needs to debate the trade‑offs.

I like hands‑free glasses for photos at concerts because I can capture a moment without living through a screen.

Totally—we rarely rewatch fireworks anyway; one great clip is enough.

What’s your read on home robots versus the robotics we expected by now?

AI plus robotics changes everything, and some tech leaders are wildly bullish on timelines; regardless, the smart play is factories first, not homes. Sell specialized bots that pay for themselves fast, then bring those wins to consumer life later.

I’ve seen grid‑style warehouses where the floor is all stock and robots slide above it—massively efficient.

Exactly; whoever becomes the Nvidia of factory robots by nailing those use cases will lead the category.

For people who missed it, what’s the Glitterbomb story?

A porch theft set me off, so I built a bait box with hidden phones, a glitter cyclone, weaponized stink, and fake police chatter, then upgraded it yearly. Half the faces you see were unblurred because they signed releases—for a gift card.

You got thieves to sign with a coffee card—that’s unbelievable.

People value reputation differently, and the bigger target became scam call centers; with Jim Browning we infiltrated their systems, planted roach‑release lunchboxes and smoke, and used story to create public pressure that helped get centers shut and officials arrested.

It’s the tinkerer using clever tools to rebalance the scales—the ancient myth has a new twist.

Data alone rarely moves the world; emotion does, which is why I focus on agency and story—if I had one call from a third‑world jail, I’d ring Jimmy (MrBeast) to mobilize a plan.

What engineering tools do you use on human problems?

Start with a clear objective, break it into chunks, prototype, iterate, and treat failures as the path to the answer. The same loop builds a rover, a backyard garden, or a business.

How much do soft skills matter when the work is technical?

They’re essential; big outcomes need teams aligned by a story they believe, and that means evoking feeling, not just sharing specs. That’s our CrunchLabs mission—spark curiosity with fun builds and hide the learning inside, and now we’re producing a free third‑through‑eighth‑grade science curriculum built around attention‑grabbing demos like an MRI yanking a hammer, then slipping in the concepts.

And even a fifteen‑ton Jell‑O pool becomes a lesson in chemistry and the scientific method once you’ve hooked people with the spectacle.

Are construction toys beyond LEGO still a thing, like the metal sets I grew up with, or are you and LEGO leading that space?

We’ve sold direct so far, but we’re about to hit Target and Walmart with STEM kits; that aisle has been stale for decades and we’re ready to shake it up.

What about adults who feel like their curiosity got trimmed away?

We built HackPack for ages six to one hundred and six; it’s an Arduino-based desktop robot that works out of the box, then invites you to tweak the code and swap the art so learning to hack feels doable.

People’s free time shrank and the quiet hours for tinkering got swallowed by YouTube, games, and endless feeds.

We’re flooded with inputs and starving for outputs; you only internalize so much until you make something with your own hands.

I love the idea of slow skills with no pressure to improve, like my friend who watercolored for a month without chasing tutorials.

I reframed chess by aiming to lose ten games to detach identity from outcomes, which brought the joy back; it’s like DIY rejection therapy.

There’s even a hundred-day rejection challenge where you ask for wild but legal, ethical things to numb the sting, like borrowing a hundred dollars from a stranger.

I suspect some rising depression links to being inert; we evolved to dig, build, and move, not just sit and scroll.

Meditation feels like a gym for slowness because life runs so hot we need an artificial pause to balance it.

It’s shockingly hard to sit with breath and not think, but like any muscle it strengthens and pays off with practice.

Does long hours on a glitter-bomb build ever feel like mindfulness?

Writing can flip into flow where it all pours out, but often the unsolved problem hums in the background even while I’m talking.

Chores and driving are idea machines for me; I even locked my phone in the trunk for months to enjoy the silence.

I’m pro boredom, especially for kids; fewer inputs often unlock more creativity.

I use ChatGPT a lot now and notice an aversion to wrestling with questions because it’s like having staff on call.

We’ve offloaded memory since contacts moved to phones, and LLMs are another extension of our minds as we adapt to them.

Even Google used to require real foraging, but LLMs crush that friction.

I caught myself Googling Christmas lights, switched to an LLM with exact criteria, and got perfect options fast; that behavior rewires how I search.

With Gemini in Chrome and tools like Atlas, this all blends into one layer; any sense of what OpenAI is cooking with Jony Ive involved?

My hunch is a minimal camera-and-mic assistant that sees and hears your life, remembers context, and can act agentically, like ordering exactly what you want and having it on your porch by morning.

Maybe glasses, a badge, or a watch that talks back over audio and Bluetooth.

It might just be lightweight sensors paired with your phone for the voice interface.

How do you feel about where this heads? Many thoughtful folks sound vaguely apocalyptic.

Best case is a benevolent allocator, like someone who feeds and cares for ten dogs so they stop fighting over one food pile; we’d need an AI that values us and balances resources.

Alignment space feels tiny compared to failure modes, which makes missteps likely; when do you think AGI arrives?

No one knows, but note how optimism correlates with incentives; if a utopia is even a one percent shot, the people most rewarded will roll the dice.

I hear good things from people I trust around Sam, so I’m torn between genuine concern and small glimmers of hope.

Either way, the train has left the station; I don’t lose sleep over it, I just ride the coaster like everyone else.

A global pause is unlikely, so we get an inverse arms race where each leader thinks they’ll do it right first.

On a hike above the Bay I realized this fifty mile tech strip may decide humanity’s fate, and a rival could buy months with one strike, enough to seize the lead.

I’ve even heard ultra-wealthy folks game out bunkers in New Zealand versus Greenland with wild ideas for controlling private security.

Maybe New Zealand is self-sufficient, but if it’s all collapse and cruelty, I’m not sure what survival is for.

And tokens are pointless if someone else controls the food.

AI breaks the old link between revenue and headcount; mass layoffs may boost profits, then hollow out demand because no one’s earning.

UBI pilots look mixed, and this shift feels like a step change, not just another scary gizmo; the song after the music stops might be different, maybe better, but definitely different.

That ties to a Fermi paradox take where every civilization hits a glass ceiling as its power to explore also becomes power to self-destruct.

Two answers to where everyone is are both chilling: we’re alone, or we’re not.

We’re helping NASA plan a mission to Enceladus to drill the ice and send a sub into a warm ocean; finding life there would be exhilarating and unnerving.

Exoplanet hunters like David Kipping make me think about this constantly.

If life exists twice in our own system, odds are it’s common, which hints the great filter sits ahead, not behind.

The filter could be nuclear-scale energy, Kardashev leaps, or AI; even our radio leakage raises METI versus SETI worries.
