About this episode

This episode is part of a series called Meditation Monday . The teacher, Henry Shukman, has been on my podcast twice before. He is one of only a few dozen masters in the world authorized to teach Sanbo Zen, and now, he’ll be your teacher. In addition to my long-form interviews each week, every Monday I’ll bring you a short 10-minute or so meditation, which will help you for the rest of the week. Over this four-episode series, you’ll develop a Zen toolkit to help you find greater calm, peace, and effectiveness in your daily life. Henry’s app,  The Way , has changed my life since I first started using it. Unlike other meditation apps, where you’re overwhelmed with a thousand choices, The Way is a clear step-by-step training program guided entirely by Henry. Through a logical progression, you’ll develop real skills that stick with you. I’ve been using it daily, often twice a day, and it’s lowered my anxiety more than I thought possible. Episode summary

Hey everyone, Tim Ferriss here. We’re launching Meditation Monday, a weekly short practice alongside the long interviews, with four sessions to build a small Zen toolkit led by Henry Shukman, an authorized Sambo Zen master and returning guest.

What can listeners expect from this first session, and how should they set up?

I’m honored to share the first of four meditations, a brief body scan you can use before, during, or after a busy day to soothe the nervous system and come home to yourself. Sit comfortably or lie down if that suits you, close or lower your eyes, and let your hands rest.

Can you walk us through the practice?

I open with a short poem inviting you to set aside plans and worries and settle into stillness. Then we ease the jaw and throat, let the arms hang, soften the chest and belly, feel the hips relax into the seat, loosen the legs, soften the face and skull, and sense the whole body quiet in a gentle warmth.

How do we wrap up today, and what comes next?

Gently bring movement back, wiggle your fingers and toes, lift your gaze, and return to the room. Thanks for joining me; next time we explore how less effort can lead to greater results.
