Episode summary

Hey, it’s Mel, welcome back, and let’s start with Tracy’s morning spiral—she grabbed the news in bed “for a minute,” lost an hour, and the whole day slid, which is why we’re digging into four tiny choices that quietly steer everything.

Choice one asks a simple question the second you wake up: what do you reach for, something that helps you rise or your phone that pulls you under with headlines, comments, and impulse buys you don’t even want.

Dr. K, what happens in the brain when tech is the first hit of the day?

You wake with dopamine reserves ready to motivate you, and high-stim tech wrings that reserve out early, so later work feels flat even if you do the same tasks. Picture a fresh lemon: squeeze hard first and you get less juice for everything that follows.

So trade the phone for life—light, water, a hug, a dog leash, a walk, even something slightly hard because using that early fuel on effort makes you feel better all day; I skinned up a mountain at dawn this morning and it changed my whole mood.

Choice two is the quiet setting you pick without noticing: are you bracing for a bad day, stacking proof you’re behind and everything is awful, or deciding you’ll make something good happen.

Dr. Crum, do mindsets really shift how we feel and function?

Mindsets steer what we notice, how we expect to feel, what we do, and even how our bodies respond. Seeing stress as strengthening or healthy food as satisfying changes outcomes because those frames guide attention, motivation, and physiology.

Try this setting: today’s a good day because I’m going to create some good, bring good energy, and protect my boundaries—it’s not denial, it’s choosing the controls you can adjust, and you can reset at any hour.

Choice three is fuel or fumes, and pretending coffee counts as breakfast is why you feel edgy, foggy, and snappy.

Morning protein steadies blood sugar and emotions, and even if you fast, pick stabilizing foods when you do eat instead of chasing a spike and crash.

Dr. Pillemer, what’s a simple fix when arguments keep exploding?

Sometimes the cure is a sandwich; my wife and I would bicker intensely while traveling until we realized we were just hungry. Don’t fight on empty—eat, then see what’s left to solve.

Fuel turns mountains back into molehills, and I’m the first to admit my family now asks me when I last ate whenever I start nitpicking.

Choice four lands at night: scroll or sleep, because revenge bedtime procrastination feels like taking your time back but steals tomorrow from you.

Light from phones before bed delays melatonin and shifts your clock, and using a phone in bed teaches your brain that bed means be alert, not sleep.

Tuck your phone in thirty minutes before lights out, build a simple wind-down, charge it far from the bed, and lay out what you want to reach for in the morning so the next good choice is effortless.

Four tiny levers, massive change—you don’t need to hit them all at once, just catch the next one, and know I love you, I believe in you, and I’ll see you in the next episode.
