Episode summary
Hey, it’s your friend Mel, and this is your full‑body reset episode. I’m sitting down with world‑class neurosurgeon Dr. Betsy Grunch to hand you simple, step‑by‑step ways to take back your health, even if you’re in pain right now.
She’s a board‑certified spine surgeon, a level one trauma pro, and the force behind Lady Spine Doc, and she’s here to help you look, move, and age better.
If I do what you teach, how does my life change?
You’ll rethink daily choices so you feel clearer and stronger now and reduce pain as you age.
What called you to this work?
My mom was a police officer who was shot at, crashed, and broke her neck, and watching her rehab made me want to help people like her.
And entering a male‑dominated field?
I walked in knowing I belonged and decided to outwork and outperform, period.
How did caregiving shape your bedside manner?
Being on the other side taught me empathy and the weight of a sixty‑second conversation, so I deliver hard news with care and context.
What should people know before surgery?
Lifestyle can keep you off the table, and surgery isn’t a cure; choices like spinal fusion can create future problems if you don’t change habits.
So what actually keeps us off the table?
Sustainable habits beat crash plans; do what you can repeat on your busiest days.
You’ve been candid about letting your own health slide—what flipped the switch?
Stress eating became my coping tool, and postpartum I dropped to the floor with knife‑like back pain and thought, I’m not ending up on my own OR table.
What were your first steps?
I rested, managed inflammation, leaned on help at home, started riding a Peloton for community, and learned nutrition basics like time‑restricted eating I could actually maintain.
How did you make it stick through another pregnancy and real life?
I accepted setbacks, focused on small repeatable changes, and kept going when I stumbled.
Walk us through a good day that fits your life.
I’m not a morning workout person, so I have coffee, eat eggs and oatmeal with blueberries, plan protein‑and‑veg meals, prep so I don’t improvise, and lift or ride at night after the kids are down.
What do you personally avoid to protect your back?
No nicotine because it constricts blood flow, blocks healing, and ramps up inflammation, which speeds spine wear.
I avoid long sedentary stretches and make sure I move daily, even if it’s a short walk.
I lift with my legs and keep my core braced so a simple box pickup doesn’t turn into an injury.
I sleep in neutral alignment, never on my stomach; back sleepers do best with a pillow under the knees, side sleepers with one between the knees and a supportive pillow that keeps the neck level.
If you wake up sore, what does that tell you?
Your sleep setup needs a tweak—check position, pillows, and possibly the mattress.
Most of us sit all day—how do we counter that?
Your core, back, diaphragm, and pelvic floor are your scaffolding, so stand up regularly, use a sit‑stand setup if you can, and keep those muscles engaged.
Best posture while seated?
Neutral spine with light lumbar support, both feet on the floor, shoulders back, and neck tall; it’s awareness more than fancy chairs.
What is tech neck doing to us?
Tilting your head forward multiplies the load on your neck, drives headaches and strain, so lift your phone and raise screens to eye level to save your future self.
Is decline with age inevitable?
Genetics and injuries exist, but daily choices create very different seventies; small consistent changes add up.
How does extra weight play into back pain?
More load and forward pull on the spine means more stress on discs and joints, and you can change that at any age.
Where do you start when you hurt and feel overwhelmed?
Dial in nutrition first, keep a food log, cut mindless sugar, and take control of what goes in your hand and mouth.
Which exercises do you love for spine support?
Build the core with glute bridges and bird dogs, and see a physical therapist once or twice to nail form.
Gyms can be intimidating, especially for women—advice?
You belong in the weight area; ask the desk for a walk‑through, visit once just to explore, then return with a plan and you’ll feel at home fast.
What should we eat for back health?
Reduce inflammatory foods and soda, lean into berries and greens, and aim for roughly one gram of protein per pound of body weight; shakes and bars help on busy days.
What happens to a woman’s spine through pregnancy and after?
Your abdomen stretches, ligaments loosen, posture shifts, and the pelvis adapts, so expect chaos for a while and give yourself grace while you rebuild.
Can you clarify sciatica and nerve pain?
Sciatica is nerve pain traveling down the leg from the sciatic nerve, and nerve pain can feel like fire; if you have bowel or bladder issues, numbness, weakness, radiating pain, or it’s not improving after weeks, see a doctor.
What if a doctor brushes you off?
Don’t accept medical gaslighting; find someone who listens and investigates.
What’s the single biggest takeaway?
You’re in the driver’s seat; put yourself on the list, expect setbacks, and keep steering toward the life you want.
How’s your mom today, and what has she taught you?
Betty is still paralyzed yet finds joy every day, and she reminds me life can change in a blink, so seek joy and control what you can, not what others think.
You changed my day today, and this was one of my favorite conversations; thank you for listening. I’m with Dr. Grunch on this, you’re in the driver’s seat, and if you use her guidance you can change your health and your life, so please share this with the people you love.
If no one told you today, hear it from me: I love you, I believe in you, and I trust your ability to build a better life. Take what you learned and go use it; I’ll be waiting for you in the next episode, and I’ll see you there.
Quick behind the scenes moment while I grabbed a protein shake, checked the setup, and cheered how fantastic you were.
