I was obsessed with what lives behind the smile; illness later shrank my tolerance for crowds, which mirrored how many with chronic conditions get dismissed when their body stops responding the way it used to.

In the NICU I saw preterm infants slow their hearts so much it threatened oxygen delivery—the vagal paradox—so I dug into evolution and found a distinctly mammalian system that reads faces and voices to co‑regulate safety.

Walk me through the adaptive logic of those states.

All states are adaptive: ancient immobilization and mobilization handle threat, while a newer ventral vagal system enables safe proximity, play, and intimacy through facial and vocal cues we exchange in real time.

And it lets us signal when we need help.

Signal is the key word; we rapidly infer another’s accessibility from eyes, face, and voice, and decide whether to lean in or bail.

You say we arrive with a quest to feel safe—why?

We’re not self‑sufficient; we survive through co‑regulation, which is why people with trauma often bond with social animals when human contact feels too risky.

What wrong conclusions follow from that mix-up?

People claim it is not physiological while arguing against points the theory never makes. I set up a polyvagal scholar program to enforce fidelity, I’m publishing a clear architecture of the mammalian social system that links co-regulation to health, and my rule is simple. Show me where I wrote the thing you’re attacking.
