Episode summary
Welcome back to Sharper Square, where we turn squares into sharps and make the wiseguys lean in. This is the stripped‑down, in‑the‑room version where Simon and I argue through our final five contest picks with dynamic lines, and you can track us in the free Sharper Square Pick’em. Ready to roll?
First up, Chargers at Chiefs. The number shot from three and a half to six with bone‑chilling weather in Kansas City; our contest line is five and a half but we locked minus four and a half early. I love the setup: Chiefs’ bad luck due to flip, weather tilts against the Chargers, and their offensive line worries me; you still with me?
I am. Pros hit this hard and pushed it up, which makes grabbing a better contest number even sweeter. We’re playing the situation more than a power rating—cold, a compromised Chargers quarterback and a pass rush that doesn’t scare Mahomes—so I still like Chiefs in contest, even if the absolute top of market makes the Chargers tempting for a tiny middle.
Bills at Patriots is our Rock and a Hard Place pick, presented by Hard Rock Bet. It’s snow and twenty degrees, and after some joyful offseason‑timed baby news for Josh Allen, we’ve been riding Buffalo around minus one to minus one and a half, even though the pro community is split.
There’s been real debate, but my number is Bills minus three and New England’s trenches are banged up. Buffalo’s pass rush can pop in spots and Allen’s legs are a lever they’ll pull in this weather, so at this price I’m willing to pay for the Bills in a game that could swing the division.
Fun aside, Drake Maye might be in a sugar coma from all the holiday treats, but on the field New England’s run defense has slipped with injuries and Buffalo wants to run right at you. This is a championship‑pedigree, must‑handle‑business spot for the Bills.
Lions at Rams is six; we grabbed five and a half. You flagged this Tuesday—still there?
Still Rams. I’m chalk‑heavy this week, but Detroit’s secondary is gutted and Stafford is in rhythm against man and zone. The Rams only stumble when opponents can run and sit on the ball, and while Detroit can do that, I make this closer to seven; market love on the Lions hasn’t scared me off laying six if needed.
Detroit’s offensive line is also beat up, while the Rams’ run game and heavy personnel are humming and their receivers have shredded coverages all year. Next, Green Bay at Denver: the line drifted toward Denver late, and our contest number is the worst of it at Packers minus two and a half, which worries me a bit.
Some of that move feels tied to uncertainty around a key Denver back, but I still prefer the Packers. Denver’s offense has bogged down against good defenses, and while we love Love, this is more a bet on Green Bay’s defense getting healthier and disruptive, with the offense helped by key receivers back in the fold.
Love has handled pressure well, and Denver often wins with five‑man rush and elite corners, so we’re really asking the Packers’ defense to cap Bo Nix. That leaves us four favorites and we need a dog; I circled Minnesota plus five and a half in Dallas, with some sixes out there earlier.
I’m on it too. The number feels a bit fat for what Flores’ defense can do to veteran quarterbacks, but the question is whether JJ can keep pace; I make it three and a half. Cowboys off a loss can explode, yet with all the Dallas money and teaser exposure, the Vikings spread—and a tiny moneyline sprinkle—make sense.
It came down to Vikings‑Cowboys or Panthers‑Saints. Carolina now controls the South after Tampa’s loss, we liked them early, but the contest gave us two and a half while the market brushed three, so my confidence leaked and I slotted Minnesota. You still uneasy?
A bit. It’s tough backing two ugly dogs off big wins; the Saints have been strangely better on the road, and the pressure on Bryce Young is massive. Carolina has been brutal as a favorite for two seasons, books say they need the Saints, and some big public shops are holding two and a half while taking Panthers money; I’d lean Saints but get taking the bigger Minnesota number.
That bigger cushion, plus trusting one reliable Vikings unit, broke the tie for me.
If we were to pivot, I’d consider Washington over the Giants around plus two to plus two and a half; I make it close to pick, Giants are rough, and Washington has real weapons. I also like Cincinnati, but the numbers likely keep it out.
Do we swap Washington in for Minnesota? Our only other change would be losing Chiefs minus four and a half for five and a half.
Four favorites scares me, but Buffalo and Green Bay are chalk without big public or pro love. The only bad contest number is Packers minus two and a half and it’s manageable; if we cut anyone it’s Minnesota, yet I’m not more confident in the other dogs. Let’s not overthink it.
Agreed. Official contest card: Chiefs minus four and a half, Vikings plus five and a half, Bills minus one and a half, Rams minus five and a half, and Packers minus two and a half.
