I split my time between clinic and research, and I’m here to take on Alzheimer’s, a disease that steals identity and disproportionately harms women.
Most cases are driven by lifestyle, not destiny, and that lights a fire in me because preventable suffering—especially in women who’ve been overlooked—should not be our norm.
When do people actually start developing it, and what’s happening in the brain long before symptoms show up?
Dementia is a family of disorders and Alzheimer’s is one of them; the process usually begins in midlife, often decades before memory problems, when sleep loss, inactivity, and poor diet slowly chip away at neural health.
You can see it on scans—thinning cortex, enlarged spaces, shrinking gray matter—which is why prevention in your thirties and forties matters.
Why do some sixty-year-olds stay razor sharp while others fade—what’s the deciding factor?
Cognitive reserve, the brain’s buffer against stressors, is built by novelty, learning, and especially movement; more connections and stronger networks mean better resilience even when pathology exists.
So what builds that reserve most reliably?
Exercise is king, reading and handwriting help, while dopamine-snacking on endless scrolling undermines focus and depth.
What’s the most convincing evidence that exercise protects the brain?
Resistance training in people with mild cognitive issues has enhanced processing speed, protected gray matter, and sharpened reasoning, and leg power in twins predicted bigger brains and better cognition.
What’s the mechanism—why does lifting help the brain grow and stay young?
Lifting heavy releases muscle signals that cross into the brain to spark neuron growth in memory centers, boost BDNF, and lower inflammation, with bonus anti-cancer effects from those same molecules.
How much and what kind, if I want brain and cancer protection?
Aim for daily movement and a mix across the week—high-effort intervals to push heart and lungs, sustained aerobic work for blood flow and BDNF, and two to three strength sessions for neural drive.
If you could only do one lift forever to protect your brain?
The deadlift, done well, recruits almost everything and gives you massive neural return.
Sedentary life is my weak spot—does sitting wreck the gains even if I work out?
Long sitting is its own risk, but standing up for brief bodyweight sets every hour—like ten air squats—can blunt the damage and flatten post-meal glucose spikes.
Talk to me about zone training—what should busy people prioritize?
Women often get better payoff focusing first on high-intensity work and lifting, adding steady zone two if time allows; outdoor runs add sensory richness, but short, hard efforts deliver outsized brain and heart benefits.
You mentioned heart remodeling—can training really reverse aging in the heart?
A two-year program of around four hours weekly, including one day of very hard intervals, one long aerobic day, one moderate session, and one strength day, reversed heart stiffening by roughly two decades when started before around sixty five.
Beyond exercise, what vascular issues accelerate brain decline?
High blood pressure kills tiny brain vessels and loosens the blood–brain barrier; daily home checks and driving pressures toward one twenty over eighty through lifestyle or medication preserves cortex and cognition.
If you got an Alzheimer’s diagnosis, what would you do that day?
There’s no cure once declared, but I’d double down on training, tighten lipids and diet, use ketones or a ketogenic approach to fuel a starved brain, and keep engaging socially and cognitively.
Why ketones, and what about women in menopause?
During estrogen decline the brain’s glucose use drops markedly, so ketones become a clean backup fuel; many women in perimenopause benefit from a structured ketogenic phase alongside sleep repair.
Should women consider hormone therapy to protect the brain?
The big trials we need aren’t here yet, but hormone therapy can ease hot flashes, restore sleep, and support muscle and bone, which indirectly lowers risk; the transdermal patch is a common, practical route to discuss with a physician.
What actually makes Alzheimer’s different inside the brain?
Amyloid accumulates when deep sleep cleaning falters, and tau inside neurons collapses transport rails under stress; estrogen helps block tau’s derailment, which is one reason women face higher risk.
So sleep is not optional—how fragile is it?
Even one short night raises harmful proteins by several percent, and you can’t repay all of that, though banking extra rest before known deprivation helps.
If your sleep went off the rails, what levers would you pull?
Decide if the issue is falling asleep or staying asleep, try GABA for a racing mind, move carbs to dinner, power down stressors, cool your sleep environment or use a cooling mattress, add glycine for temperature drop, and consider adaptogens like ashwagandha or rhodiola for cortisol balance.
Supplements—what matters most for the brain, and how do we buy wisely?

You’re fiercely driven—what forged that?
Women are underrepresented, undertreated, and asked to endure in silence, and losing my grandmother—who hid symptoms until it was too late—made this mission personal.
I’m angry at systems that confuse and fail women, from fear around hormone therapy to whiplash public health messaging, and I channel that into action.
What did it cost you to live this way, and how do you define success?
I left home for New York, missed moments, and traded comfort for growth, and success to me is the skill of switching brain states on demand and then recovering, the flow of being fully on and fully off.
Are you optimistic about your work, especially where Alzheimer’s care and understanding are headed?
I am, mainly because social platforms let me teach for free and help people realize they have agency over their brains, though I’m not waiting for a savior or a simple fix.
Do you ever wish you weren’t so consumed by your craft and could turn the dial down a notch?
Sometimes, yes, and I wonder how different life might look if I’d chosen a more ordinary path.
It’s tricky because the part of me that’s obsessed is the one deciding, and I still catch myself asking if dialing it back would make me happier overall.
Isn’t the aim to know yourself and chase something larger than you?
I worry about what I’m giving up and whether I’ll feel I made the wrong trade at the end.
We can’t know, so I ask what I’d regret if everything ended tomorrow.
For me, it’s making more memories with the people I love.
Now imagine building a life of moments and then losing them, even failing to recognize your family or your own face, which is the cruelty of dementia.
That’s why it’s so brutal, because you lose someone who’s still here.
I’ve watched someone who knew me a few years ago now look in the mirror and not recognize herself.
She’ll even ask if I’m her daughter.
Our closing tradition: what does God mean to you?
To me, God is the unseen power that holds and guides you, and I do believe; I’m Christian, Greek Orthodox.
When I see minds fall apart and other injustices, prayer can feel empty, and that’s fueled my struggle with religion since I was young.
The precision of conception and brain development, and what I’ve seen in medicine, make it hard to ignore a higher power and why hospitals keep chapels when science can’t comfort.
I’ve watched outcomes that looked impossible, like a woman who was seventy-eight years old with a massive facial tumor who was walking and clear-headed the next day after surgery, and I’m left asking if that’s God or brilliant surgery.
I don’t pretend to know, but I’m curious, and I see why faith matters.
