About this episode

This week on Show Me Something, Sophie Cunningham and West Wilson are back for Episode 40 — and there’s a LOT happening. The crew celebrates the podcast’s major award nomination before diving headfirst into WNBA chaos, with Sophie giving a brutally honest update on the Indiana Fever’s early season growing pains, why she thinks this team can become elite with a roster that features Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell, and Lexie Hull, plus the hilarious story behind her accidental shot-block celebration. West and Sophie break down the wild Victor Wembanyama NBA playoff takeover in Game 1 of the series between the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder, why pro athletes supporting other leagues is actually the coolest thing ever, and what really makes home court such a weapon. Then it gets delightfully unhinged: fake celebrity scam accounts stealing fans’ money, MLB players getting told to stop their very questionable celebration, a shocking baseball animal cruelty scandal, Bumble handing your love life over to AI, and the bizarre superstitions athletes swear by when they’re in a slump and Sophie’s emotional attachment to old makeup brushes. Episode summary

Episode 40 kicks off with love for our fans, because when they get loud, it’s that extra push we feed on.

Surprise good news to start: we’re up for a best women’s sports content and podcast honor, plus a fan vote for most entertaining, which we didn’t even see coming and we’re hyped about.

Season’s rolling and the Fever are full throttle, but first I had to clown Sophie’s rare block and the very cute celebration that followed.

I’m not a shot blocker, so when I timed that one, I shocked myself; we can be an elite defensive group once we settle on coverages and get our rhythm.

Quick stat check had you sneaking onto the blocks column, and then we slid into Wemby talk because that deep three at his size is unreal.

He doesn’t feel real sometimes; also shout to Tyrese Haliburton and the Pacers staff for pulling up to our games—cross‑sport support in the city feels great.

Pro athletes backing each other is dope; how’s your body holding up?

Season tired is normal, but I feel good, knee’s solid, vibes are up—and yeah, dropping 17 off the bench felt nice.

Heads‑up to listeners: scammers are impersonating us with syrupy emails, so stay alert.

If anyone asks you for money or weird favors, it’s not me; we’ve had real cases and even looped in law enforcement, and I’m grateful for fans while keeping clear boundaries.

We host Portland next; they’re young and hungry, and I’m big on protecting home court because road games tilt toward the home team’s flow and comfort.

What’s your go‑to to juice the crowd?

Once they’re rolling, it’s brutal on opponents, and our fans match our fire, so I lean into that energy.

You’ve been tough on officiating before, but you said they’re better this year—what changed?

Consistency—whistles are tight early, which forces cleaner habits, then you let physical play ramp up when it matters most.

Big picture: who do you want this team to be?

We won’t peak too soon; chemistry takes time with new minutes and returning pieces, and defensively all five have to commit every possession if we want to be elite.

Watching the NBA playoffs, defense jumps ten times; do you feel that switch too?

Every possession matters across our season, and I love a full‑clock lockdown; also, Wemby gets hit constantly, and that ejection the other night was the right call.

Headlines: the Giants toned down a spicy postgame celebration after league feedback—should that kind of fun be policed?

Looked like they got the memo and pulled it back, which is probably where this lands.

Another story links an MLB reliever to alleged cockfighting, which is illegal; thoughts?

Cultural differences aside, harming animals says a lot—I don’t condone it, and I support firm penalties and protections for animals and kids.

Dating‑app shake‑up: removing swipes for an AI matchmaker that drops someone straight into your messages.

Apps already claimed smart matching, but swiping fed a quick hit of power and validation; also, fake profiles of me are out there, and I hope the impostors at least aren’t corny.

People were swiping just to swipe; I’ve never used a dating app, and now we’ve definitely lost that sponsorship.

Slump cures: a catcher showered in full uniform and broke an 0‑for streak—any rituals?

I used to cue up Party in the USA getting off the bus because it put me in a good headspace, and I still think performative nonsense on the field comes back as karma and could use a sports‑psych reset.

Slumps are mental and humbling; if you think you walk on water, the game checks you fast.

Off the court, we get attached to stuff—old jeans, lucky shoes, even makeup brushes past their prime—because they’ve been through it with us.

We even project feelings onto objects; now I’ve got more meetings, but lunch was steak, eggs, peppers, and greens, and I’m sorting out the carb debate while admitting athletes still need some.

Go enjoy your carbs and cheese, and we’ll see you next time.
