About this episode

This episode is part of a series called  Meditation Monday . The teacher, Henry Shukman, has been on my podcast twice before. He is one of only a few dozen masters in the world authorized to teach Sanbo Zen, and now, he’ll be your teacher. In addition to my long-form interviews each week, every Monday I’ll bring you a short 10-minute or so meditation, which will help you for the rest of the week. Over this four-episode series, you’ll develop a Zen toolkit to help you find greater calm, peace, and effectiveness in your daily life. Henry’s app,  The Way , has changed my life since I first started using it. Unlike other meditation apps, where you’re overwhelmed with a thousand choices, The Way is a clear step-by-step training program guided entirely by Henry. Through a logical progression, you’ll develop real skills that stick with you. I’ve been using it daily, often twice a day, and it’s lowered my anxiety more than I thought possible. As a listener of my podcast, you can get 30 free sessions by visiting  https://thewayapp.com/tim  and downloading the app. See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info .

Episode summary

Hey friends—ladies and germs included, Tim Ferriss here with a new experiment I’m calling Meditation Monday. Each week you’ll get a short practice, around ten minutes, and across four Mondays you’ll build a simple Zen toolkit led by Henry Shuttman, an authorized Sambo Zen master and two-time guest—so settle in and enjoy.

Welcome, I’m Henry Shuttman. We’ve explored a body scan, the power of doing less, and how to include stress; now we’ll use an old Zen pointer about stepping back and turning awareness inward to touch a built-in sense of well-being.

Find a comfortable seat, soften your eyes or look down, and let your hands rest where it feels natural. Allow the whole body to go loose and unguarded, even if you’re upright, and let the arms hang like soft ropes.

In full-body rest, a different quality of awareness often shows up by itself, like the creative clarity that comes when we stop pushing. Give yourself a brief pause from the forward lean of daily life, take a tiny step back, receive what’s here, and come home to yourself.

From that small retreat, a wider quiet becomes obvious, a peaceful awareness that has been present all along and can spread through your day. It brings both deep rest and a broader view, sometimes even a light taste of being less bound by clock time.

Let’s come back gently: move a little, wiggle fingers and toes, lift the gaze, take a fuller breath, and look around. Use this practice anytime—morning, evening, or midstream—thank you for sitting with me, and I wish you a very good rest of your day.
